Dear VNN Member:

From all of us at VNN, we hope that you are preparing for a relaxing weekend with family and friends.   Enjoy the 4th of July festivities in your hometown!

If you still have an opportunity to be in your local media this weekend, our Fireworks and Noise Phobia Message Points might be a great place to start your preparation.

Oh...I just remembered!  Tomorrow, July 1st, is Canada Day!  So, happy birthday to TWO great nations!

Cat looking at bowl of milk

This week started off with a small scare as Nestle Purina announced a small recall of cat food distributed to three western states.  Thankfully, no illnesses, human or pet, were reported.

Beyond the oppressive heat over much of the country, lots of news stories are starting to focus on external parasites as well.  Due to the "yuck" factor as well as the problems they cause for us and our pets, people want to know how to combat fleas and ticks.   Use our resources to prepare for a local interview or to jump start your blogging juices!

Want to generate some interaction on your Facebook page or in the Twitter universe?  Post this link about the Denver man who stabbed his puppy in the face multiple times!   Just be prepared for the often graphic details your followers will post about their thoughts about this horrific incident.

Be aware...the animal rights group, Mercy For Animals, has released yet another video alleging abuse.  This time it was at an Iowa pig farm.

For routine updates on newsworthy stories and potential social media items, make sure you and your hospital follow our Veterinary News Network Facebook page.  Many of these stories can be found on our "Wall".

Are Your Clients Using Social Networks?

Tom Dock - Reporter Relations Manager, VNN

Do you think teenagers and college students are the only ones using sites like Facebook?   Think again!

One of the biggest concerns we hear from our members and prospective members is this:

"How do we know we are reaching people who could qualify as our clients?"

That's a great question and I think some recent research from The Pew Research Centers Internet and American Life Project might help provide some answers for you.

First, understand that almost 80% of American adults use the Internet and almost 60% of those people use at least one social networking site.  This percentage has doubled in just the last two years.  And...before you dismiss social networking as a playground for the young adults, realize that the average age of a social network user is now 38 and over half of all social networkers are over the age of 35.  In addition, 56% of them are female.

In other words...your clients and prospective clients are spending time online and on the social sites!

Where are they?  Well, 92% of them are on Facebook!  MySpace still gathers about 1/3 of all social network users and LinkedIn and Twitter trail with 18% and 13 % respectively.  So...having a presence on Facebook is now essential for you to reach out to your clients.

This is not news to most of you as fully 70% of our VNN members already have created Facebook pages for their hospitals!  What you may not know is that YOU are way ahead of the curve.  Our research and conversations with individuals well versed in social media (like our own Brenda Tassava, CVPM, CVJ) has shown that less than 15% of veterinarians across the country engage with people on Facebook or in any social media setting.

So, you are doing the right thing by having a Page, now what?  Well, further research by Pew shows that more than half of Facebook users and a third of Twitter users use the platform at least once daily.  And, the average Facebook user has 229 "friends", so standing out in their busy news feeds will be a challenge!

Our advice?  You should also be updating your page or Twitter account on a very regular basis!  I would recommend at least once daily.  If you want to update more frequently, use one of the scheduling tools available in TweetDeck, HootSuite or various other applications to schedule posts at different times of day.   It will save you time and increase the potential to connect with your clients.  Follow our pages (Veterinary News Network, PetDocsOnCall.com and the American Society of Veterinary Journalists) for ideas, news stories and other fun updates that you can share.

One final word of advice:  don't post and forget about it!  Be interactive and respond to comments and questions that your fans might post.  Try to engage your fans by asking questions in the original post.  The more they engage with you and the more you reciprocate, the more often your hospital will show up in their news feeds, which, of course, increases your potential to be seen.  And that is the return on your time investment in social media.

As always, never hesitate call or email if you have questions or concerns about your Facebook page or any social media.  We are happy to help!

Loki in the shade

July is the official start of the "Dog Days of Summer" and, as we have been suggesting, discussing how to keep pets safe in the heat is a great media pitch.  Dr. Suzanne Heartsill, a VNN member in Tennessee, was recently interviewed by local media and will be appearing this Friday on WREG-TV.  Great job!  If you haven't connected with your local media yet, this story will often work.  Remember, resources are available for you at the MyVNN.com site!

July is also National Hot Dog Month (no pun intended) and the second week of July is National Farrier's Week.  Our upcoming story release for July 1st is one that correlates well with farriers...Modern Horse Care.  Even if you have never and will never see a horse in practice, this story is still a good way to help people understand the progress that veterinary medicine has made!

We now have a new resource at MyVNN.com.  Check out our Perpetual Animal Events Calendar!
Sincerely,

VNN Season Six Ratings Report!

Big News graphic

Every year at this time, VNN produces our Media Ratings Report.  This report helps us see the impact that YOU, our members, are having on delivering high quality, highly focused and informative material to pet owners and animal enthusiasts!

We are VERY excited to report that for the 2010-11 season (our 6th season), we surpassed even our own expectations and generated

more than 812 million audience impressions!

To put that in perspective, that is like having a segment on NBC Today, Good Morning America AND the CBS Early Show every day of the week for an entire year!  Now that's powerful!

More importantly, thanks to every single one of our members who finds ways to interact with local and social media in the pursuit of educating pet owners.  You all deserve a big round of applause and our thanks!

It is with great anticipation that Dr. Jim and I look into the future of VNN.  Not only will we continue to provide you with the necessary resources you need for media interactions, we will also continue our work to make sure that you are informed about technological changes in media, new opportunities (Google +1 anyone?) and monitor the ever-growing Web for the news that you need to know.

Social Media Facts

What makes people follow you on Facebook and/or Twitter?

The blog website, GetSatisfaction.com, notes that there is no doubt that a positive online brand experience will create loyal customers.

In fact, more than 97% of respondents to a recent survey indicated that an online experience has influenced whether or not they bought a product or service from a brand.

97%!!   That should have you rethinking everything from your website to your Facebook interactions!

In addition, more than 60% of Facebook users who follow your page (brand) will recommend you to others...66% of your Twitter followers will do the same.

So, are you interacting enough with your online network?  Do your followers have a positive experience and continually learn from your web presence?
