Dear VNN Member:

Just before setting this newsletter up for publication today, I received word that Japan was rocked with another 7+ magnitude aftershock.  Our hearts continue to go out to the Japanese people as they strive to recover from the multitude of disasters they have endured.

But, in the midst of the chaos and sadness, we still see some absolutely amazing stories of survival.  This dog was rescued from an island of debris in the middle of the ocean, three weeks after the tsunami hit:

In light of these natural disasters, it's a good idea to review some disaster preparedness message points, especially as they pertain to pets.  And, for those of you who are interested or involved in state/local animal response teams, The Great Central US Shakeout is a National Level Exercise simulating a massive earthquake centered on the New Madrid fault.  This exercise will happen on April 28th (April 19th in Indiana).

Animals in the News This Week

Girl and LabradorA great press release was seen this week, coming from the American Pet Products Association.  Pet ownership is at it's highest level in more than two decades.  Almost 73 million households in the US now own one kind of pet or another.  This is good news for all of us because you know that those pets will need care!

Sadly, several serious animal abuse cases made headlines this week, including this Indiana woman who tossed her 18 month old Cocker from a moving car and then tried to run her over!  Do you think that she will receive any sort of significant punishment?

A woman in Seattle is suing the city for $60,000 after her German Shorthair Pointer stepped on a metal plate in the sidewalk and was electrocuted in front of her eyes.  A pinched wire in a streetlight along with improper grounding caused the plate to be energized and then kill the dog.  This case leads to a concern about "emotional damages" for pets and was the subject of one of my recent blogs at PetDocsOnCall.  I am interested in your opinions...is this amount justified?  How will this affect veterinary medical care if this suit of judgement becomes commonplace?

How Valuable is VNN?

Tom Dock - Reporter Relations Manager, VNN

By the month or by the minute, VNN is designed to help you!

As you can imagine, I field many phone calls on a regular basis and spend LOTS of time explaining the benefits of VNN membership.  If you are receiving this newsletter, you already are well aware of most of what we do.  But, have you really seen all of what VNN can do to help you with your practice and your desire to inform your clients and/or your community?

BY THE MONTH:

Each month, VNN produces two new animal health stories with multiple types of resources for your use in local media, on your website or as part of your social media marketing game plan.  These stories are professionally researched and written and are designed to save you time and effort.  Don't forget that we expect that you will "make the story your own" and put your name and hospital name in the by-line!

Also, every month VNN offers at least one hour long webinar to help you learn more about media in general.  From social media powerhouses like Facebook to approaching your local weekly paper, we are dedicated to providing you with great information to answer your questions and concerns.

BY THE WEEK:

Our VNN News Alert and VNN Media Insider newsletters come straight to your email inbox every Thursday afternoon.  This brief communication is designed to not only let you know what's happening at VNN, but also keep you in touch with newsworthy animal health and veterinary stories from around the country or even the world!  Miguel de Cervantes said, "Forewarned, forearmed; being prepared is half the victory."  This is especially true when it comes to the media...VNN helps you to stay "forearmed" and ready for whatever the media might throw at you!

In addition, these newsletters are a great aid in generating ideas for your blogs, newspaper columns or any other media segment.

BY THE DAY:

Through our social media network, VNN strives to keep members informed of news that's relevant to veterinary practice.  Whether it's a new piece of proposed legislation or information on disaster relief efforts, staying in tune with our Facebook pages, Twitter accounts and even our own social site, PetDocsOnCall helps keep you in the loop.  Beyond just letting you know about the news, we will remind you of resources that we might already have in place to discuss the topic at hand...again, saving you time and effort!

WHENEVER WE ARE NEEDED, 24-7:

As much as you plan, you will still get caught unaware by a crisis...either in your hospital, your local community or occasionally national in scope.  VNN gives you instant access to professional help and concerned colleagues that are dedicated to providing assistance to you.  Even if the need is not urgent, we are still happy to provide personalized consultations with you and point you towards the answers for your situation.

THE FUTURE?

Much as we have done for the past six years, VNN will continue to adapt to the changing media landscape.  Our dedication is to you, the busy practitioners and it's our goal to keep you up to date on both animal/veterinary news topics and which media outlet will work best for your personal and practice needs!

Upcoming Events and Reminders

Friday, April 15th is the date for our next VNN story release.  Be sure to check out this great look at Wobbler's Disease.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:  Starting the week of April 18th, I will be calling or emailing ALL of our members.  This call is important because it helps us generate our ratings report for this past year!  Please let your staff know that I will be calling and check your messages that week.  We will need to talk to you!!  Please plan on letting me know what media you have been involved with during 2011 so far.

This is also a good time to give us some feedback on stories you would like to see VNN investigate or produce and even let us know what kind of resources you need from us.  I look forward to chatting with ALL of you!

We now have a new resource at MyVNN.com.  Check out our Perpetual Animal Events Calendar!

Social Media Marketing Industry Report

Exclamation Point
We all know that social media marketing is the "hot" item right now...but do we know if it is working?

In the 2010 Social Media Marketing Report, more than 3,300 social media marketers were surveyed to find out how their efforts were progressing.

More than 81% of those surveyed said that their social media efforts generated increased exposure for their business.

78% said that investing a minimum of 6 hours per week in social media activities led to an increase in traffic to their websites.

62% of marketers involved in social media saw search engine rankings increase.

73% surveyed are planning on increasing their social media efforts with more than 3 out of every 4 marketers considering improving their presence on YouTube and engaging more video in their efforts.

Although social media takes time, a significant portion of those surveyed agreed that overall marketing costs declined when social media efforts were implemented.

SO...if you have been on the fence about social media, this information could help persuade you that you need to get on board soon!
