Dear VNN Member:

Now that Election Day is behind us, I anticipate that we will see more animal health stories in the news.  And, you can get your story in the media at this time of year in a number of different ways!!

For instance, look at Dr. Matt Nelson, a VNN Member from Geneseo, Illinois.  He now has a monthly gig on his local TV station, KWQC.  He used the fact that November is National Diabetes Month (and Adopt a Senior Pet Month) to create a segment discussing how to keep our pets from developing this disease.

Of course, there are a multitude of topics that can help you score a media gig this time of year: Holiday dangers, Winter dangers, Pets as Holiday Gifts, Antifreeze toxicity, Ice Melt Products, Gift Ideas for Pet Lovers, etc etc.

Also, watch the local and national news for ideas.  The passage of Proposition B in Missouri is an excellent example of a subject for a blog posting or newspaper column...whether you agree with the passage or not!

Connecting Facebook and Your Website!

Facebook iconAs we have mentioned multiple times, the WHOLE point of social media is to create an online relationship that can turn into an offline relationship.  Part of that process is insuring that people on Facebook visit your website and vice versa.  So...is your website accesible from Facebook and can people see what's happening on your Facebook page from your website?

Facebook offers many different options for connecting the two sites.  If you have a web developer, they may have already integrated a "Follow us on Facebook" button on your home page.  If they haven't or you maintain your own website, there are a variety of social plug-ins, including the "Like Button" and the Facebook feed stream that can help encourage visitation.

Conversely, make sure your website is featured on your Facebook page.   There is a place for the URL under the Info tab on your page, but you can also discreetly use your URL in status updates and direct folks to your website.

Keeping both your website and your Faceboook page "fresh" will encourage more visitation and build your reputation as a "pet expert".

Animals in the News

Stories of hormone creams harming kids and pets continue to come to light and now, further warnings about a cancer cream (containing 5-flurouracil) causing problems have surfaced.  One of our sets of Message Points from 2008 actually discusses 5-flurouracil as being one human medication that commonly affects pets.

And, in a story that is all too common, a disgruntled pet owner turns to the media when veterinarians won't treat his dog.   Take a look at this story and let me know your thoughts on this issue.  Stories like this can be useful for starting discussions in social media and gives you the opportunity to showcase the positive steps you take to help people and their pets.

Again, watching human interest stories can be a great tie-in to a pet related story.  IN this case, an intrepid reporter knows that human flu stories become popular as the weather chills, so he used that connection to create a story on canine influenza.  These are the types of things you can do with our library of Message Points.

Videos Help You Expand Your Reach!

Tom Dock - Reporter Relations Manager, VNNIf you want to make a big splash in the social media pond, using videos is the way to go!

Unlike static documents, videos seem to encourage people to comment and discuss what they are viewing.  Look at the huge success of YouTube and the continuing explosion of video channels/streams across the Internet.  Video shows your clients, your potential clients and people who might refer potential clients that you are a real person, a professional who they can bond with.  Video enables you to show off your hospital in a way that print articles and ads just can't.  Video can help establish you as an expert.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a "moving picture" is worth a fortune!

Adding videos to your website or your Facebook page is a great way to encourage interaction among visitors and followers.  The subject matter can be something as mundane as how to trim a pet's nails to controversial topics like mandatory spaying and neutering.  And, the great thing about today's technology is that you can do a lot of this work yourself AND we can help you with the rest (editing, etc).

If you are planning on adding videos, here a just a few tips to keep in mind when you are recording:

1) Hold your first and last shots for at least 3 seconds.  Smile and look at the camera.  These three seconds gives editors some "handles" to work with when adding effects or other video to your shots.

2)  Avoid swivel chairs, sit up straight and SMILE!

3) Check the area behind you on camera...is it neat and professional or sloppy??

4) If you are using a wide angle camera (like those in an iMac), ANY small movement will appear HUGE.

5) Don't stress and try to do everything in one take.  It's ok to stop, take a breath and check your script.  Be natural and just let your normal self shine through!

6) Avoid long "talking head segments".  Even the most intriguing topic about animals becomes boring if all we see is your head and your mouth moving.  Have ideas about background footage that you can use to incorporate into your video to make it more interesting.

7) Finally, above all..remember that your membership at VNN gives you access to all of our video scripts and "b-roll" footage.  For a small cost, we can create a "customized video blog" of most VNN stories that you can place on YouTube, Facebook or your website.

Our customized video service is truly unique.  Because you are a busy practitioner and you have staff members that are often equally as busy, editing video is not a top priority for you.  But, with VNN's custom video blogs, you simply need to find enough time to record yourself doing a short opening, read an already prepared script and finishing up with a personalized closing that drives people to your hospital.  We will take care of the editing, smoothing out any rough edges and adding professional graphics.

In the blink of an eye, video, especially video on the web, has become a powerful medium for sharing a message.  Let us help you by providing resources that you might not have the time to create yourself!

More Resources Coming From VNN!

Computer mouseThe world of social media, mobile devices and technology contineus to expand at a RAPID rate.  It's very hard to keep up with everything that is happening right now.  Well...we here at VNN are doing our best to keep your informed of these advances and how you can utilize them to market your practice.

In the coming months, we will be updating our MyVNN.com website to reflect all of these changes.  We will still have our story resources that you have come to expect on a monthly basis as well as our Message Point library and Media Training articles.  But, we plan to incorporate training articles, videos and webinars on the use of social media and give you button by button instructions for making our social media experience a success.  In other words, we know that you know social media is important...we want to help you with the details and be your resource for "new" media far into the future!

Have you been interviewed on camera recently?  Do you have a link to a website with a video of you that you would like to capture for your media kit?  Contact us and we may be able to help you grab that video and use in your social media or even at your hospital website or blog!
