Literacy Tip
You Read to Me, I'll Read to You
Build early literacy skills by blending reading aloud to your child with your child reading aloud to you. The You Read to Me, I'll Read to You series of books offers short story-like poems with text for you and your child to read together. Color and placement clues indicate whose turn it is to read. There are many stories to choose from including updated nursery rhymes, fables, and short stories.

Literacy Activities
Plant a Seed and Watch it Grow

Gardening is a fun way to blend family time and literacy time! Get your hands dirty, read the seed packets or plant specifications, and label the new plants together. You may even get your picky eater to try a new vegetable or two! Cherry tomatoes and carrots were favorites in our house last summer, and this year we're going to give zucchini and broccoli a try too. Bon Appetit!
Get Back to Nature
Get out and enjoy this beautiful spring weather and visit one of our local Nature Centers! The forest is full of kid-favorites like finches, squirrels, lady bugs, frogs, and caterpillars. Turn your visit into a treasure hunt and build literacy skills at the same time by bringing cards with words or pictures of the items to be found on your hike.
Hidden Oaks Nature Center in Annandale, VA, has tons of books, a dress-up area, climbing structure, treasure hunt activities, and marked trails.
The Locust Grove Nature Center in Cabin John, MD, has a tadpole pond, sand pit, lovely nature trails, and a great indoor area with books, puzzles, and even a snake.
