Literacy Tip

Read, Read, Repeat

Mother Reading to Her ChildrenDoes your child want to read the same book night after night? Take heart! You are helping build your child's reading fluency. With each reading, children learn more of the words, build a better sense of word and sentence awareness, and understand the impact of punctuation, even before they've ever heard of a comma or an exclamation point. So tonight when you find yourself reading Curious George Goes to a Costume Party again, 6 months after Halloween, remember that repeated readings = fluency success!

Literacy Activities

We're Going on a Treasure Hunt!

Treasure Hunt"Treasure" hunts in and outside of the house are so much fun.

Have your kids search for their mid-afternoon snack! Leave clues in writing for older kids, or in the form of photographs or hand-drawn pictures for the youngsters. Scatter clues throughout the house and set the kids on a path to find a yummy treat.

Books Come to Life

Head on over to the Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo where the

world premiere of If You Give a Cat a Cupcake is on stage now

through April 25th. This beloved children's story was adapted for

the stage from the book by Laura Numeroff.

Visit the website for more information.

The Imagination Stage in Bethesda is showing George and

Martha - Tons of Fun, an entertaining production featuring the two endearing hippos from the James Marshall picture books. This show runs through May 29th.
