A summer to remember

Her Majesty The Queen celebrates 60 years as our Monarch in 2012, and accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, will conclude her regional Diamond Jubilee tour by visiting the Isle of Wight. It will be a great honour and pleasure to welcome them to Cowes on 25 July.

We are fortunate also, to be about to welcome an impressive fleet of luxury yachts to Cowes, for the first ever UK Superyacht Cup, held to celebrate the start of the London Olympic Games.

I would like to encourage you to take note of the several new Local Notices to Mariners that are listed below, and wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer on and off the water in Cowes.

New CHC Marine Officer

We are pleased to have filled the new post of Marine Officer and welcome recently qualified Merchant Navy deck officer Laurence O'Callaghan to the CHC team. Laurence will provide assistance to the Deputy Harbour Master Rod Hodgson on the delivery of CHC's statutory and safety duties in the harbour.

The appointment of the new Marine Officer has allowed Barney Sollars, the Marine Services Manager, to take responsibility for the development of Kingston Wharf now that CHC has full ownership of the site.

The Deputy Harbour Master, Rod Hodgson, remains port safety and security officer, but will now also take responsibility for the harbour patrol team, CHC moorings and Shepards Wharf. Some "day to day" duties that fall within the Deputy Harbour Master's remit will be delegated to the new Marine Officer, Laurence O'Callaghan.

CHC prepares for Queen's Diamond Jubilee visit to Cowes

Her Majesty The Queen will be visiting Cowes on Wednesday, 25 July as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK. Cowes Harbour Commission will take a central role in coordinating the prestigious visit, liaising and working closely with the Island's Lord-Lieutenant, the Isle of Wight Council, and Buckingham Palace.

The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will sail to the Island onboard the 75m yacht MY Leander. The Royal party will review a Parade of Sail between Egypt Point and the Royal Yacht Squadron. The Parade of Sail will be formed by the 11 yachts competing in the Superyacht Cup Cowes.

Her Majesty will receive a 21 gun salute from the Squadron guns before disembarking at Trinity Landing at 1010 where The Queen will be met by the Island's Lord-Lieutenant, Major General Martin White.

"Cowes has been looking forward to welcoming The Queen since details of the Diamond Jubilee tour were first announced and it will be a great honour to welcome Her Majesty to the Isle of Wight. There is an exciting programme of activity taking place on the water to mark the occasion and my team at CHC will ensure that the harbour is well prepared," said Cowes Harbour Master, Captain Stuart McIntosh.

Cowes set to welcome UK's biggest ever Superyacht fleet

Cowes Harbour Commission is set to give a world class welcome to a fleet of 11 world class yachts that are right now making their way to Cowes to participate in the first ever Superyacht Cup regatta to be hosted in the UK. The Superyacht Cup Cowes will take place from 22 to 25 July, and this special event is being held to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics.

Captain Stuart McIntosh, Cowes Harbour Master said: "I am delighted that Cowes has been chosen to host this prestigious event and it is fantastic that we have managed to accommodate all these very large and spectacular yachts in Cowes. It will be a great opportunity to view these Superyachts up close when they are moored in Cowes and under sail racing from the Royal Yacht Squadron line and in the Solent."

CHC will have the exciting but challenging task of berthing the Superyacht Cup fleet, including the likes of the Athos, at 62 metres in length with a crew of over 40, and the Adela at 55 metres. Superyacht Athos will be moored at Trinity Landing for everyone to see.

Event Director for the Superyacht Cup Cowes, James Pleasance, commented: "The whole of the Superyacht Cup Cowes fleet will join in a Diamond Jubilee Parade of Sail for The Queen's visit to Cowes and this promises to be a truly spectacular sight to behold on the waters of the Solent."
