Royal seal of approval
| |
It was a tremendous honour to learn this month that HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh will be visiting Cowes in June as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
You might already know that the giant Union Jack which adorns the Columbine shed at Venture Quays was painted to celebrate the Silver Jubilee in 1977. Of course, the only other Monarch to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria who lived out her life here on the Isle of Wight at Osborne House in East Cowes.
It was also very good to see the replica of HMY Britannia arrive safe and sound into Cowes after being towed across the North Sea from Norway. Watching this boat being fitted out and completed here will be a great achievement for Cowes and we wish the Britannia Trust every success in this charitable venture.
My team is now very focussed on the start of the sailing season around Easter time. I hope that you enjoy the article about Kingston Marine Services as they are central to our own preparations, as well as working alongside many clubs and organisations in Cowes. I'm sure we will all be fully prepared to welcome our visitors in good time.
Finally, I am very pleased to announce that Cowes Harbour Commission has been granted planning consent for its proposed development of the "Sugar Store" warehouse at Shepards Wharf Marina. This will be a very important part of our overall investment in the harbour this year.

Best Regards,

Planning go ahead for Sugar Store
|
Cowes Harbour Commission has been granted full planning consent to progress development of the 'Sugar Store' warehouse at Shepherds Wharf. As well as improving facilities for yachtsmen visiting Cowes harbour, the new building will create business opportunities in the marine sector. Expressions of interest are now being encouraged from prospective commercial operators.
The new building will combine existing marina facilities with self-contained offices, a bar and restaurant, workshops and retail spaces. Harbour Master and Chief Executive Stuart McIntosh commented, "We are committed to investing in Cowes. Developing the Sugar Store will improve facilities at Shepards Wharf Marina, whilst creating new business opportunities. This should benefit both the marina users and the local economy."
The build is adjacent to a conservation area, so has been carefully drafted to assimilate the surrounding features. The new design, by local Island architects, combines nautical themes and utility, to offer a fresh and innovative style.
A commercial prospectus is now available by contacting our appointed agents Gully Howard www.gullyhoward.com.

Spotlight on Kingston Marine Services
|
Kingston Marine Services is at the heart of Cowes Harbour Commission's port operations. For many years the KMS team have provided mooring solutions, buoy deployment, towage and salvage in the Medina and close environs.
In recent years we have diversified our operations with the purchase of a larger Multicat vessel, developing bed levelling and moorings systems and seeking work further afield. Central to developing our services and firm relationships with all our customers has been quality of service and the development of standards of best practice, which we believe allow us to provide some of the best solutions available on the Solent.

Britannia arrives back in Cowes
|
The Britannia yacht left Norway in January, towed by the tug Svendborg Bugser. She arrived alongside Venture Quays at around 16.00 on Saturday 4th February with just enough light left for those who had been waiting to welcome the convoy to Cowes harbour.

Britannia will be lifted into her cradle at the South Boats Yard in Venture Quays, Cowes.
