Shabbat Shalom.
On this rainy Friday afternoon, as we finish our hectic weeks and move toward Shabbat, it is difficult not to think about Passover quickly approaching next week. Whether it is the prospect of cleaning kitchens, preparing Passover seders, or packing suitcases to travel and visit loved ones, there is always much anticipation and build up for this special holiday.
Next to Yom Kippur, Passover has always been my favorite Jewish holiday. I will get to Yom Kippur when we reach that time of year. There are so many different avenues we can take when discussing this special holiday. The most meaningful piece of the holiday to me is the historical perspective that we gain every year. We are reminded that our time in Jewish history is just a tiny piece of a much larger picture. We are reminded of from where we have come - slavery - to the freedom that we enjoy now.
Over the centuries, with all of the hardship Jews have endured, we have this miraculous holiday to shape our view of the world and reconnect to our history. We often speak in Judaism about moving from darkness to light. Passover reminds us of both - the darkness of living under oppression and the lightness of freedom. One could say that we are living in dark times right now, for a variety of reasons of which you are all well aware. And, in our lives personally we have all had times of darkness too. What we can take from the holiday at this moment is the understanding that darkness does lead to light and a better day will come. Let's celebrate Passover joyfully with a full heart knowing that there are better times ahead. As we sit at our Seder tables with our families, let's rejoice in our past and remember that our future is shaped by our memories and collective experiences.
In regard to our Jewish community, I have been engaged in wonderful conversations with our leadership and donors. Many have shared with me their frustrations and darker times working with the organized Jewish community, but are also quick to share the times that are wonderful. Through times of transition, some of which can be dark, we should find comfort in the knowledge that when we reach a conclusion, there will be lightness and joy. I have completed my first month with Federation and we are definitely in one of those times of transition when we face uncertainties. We can find comfort in our history, especially during this holiday season, that while we may have some changes ahead, we will end up stronger, as will our community. Thank you all for an enriching, enlightening and busy first month. At a time of transition in my world, you have all helped to make my experience a really positive one.
A very happy Passover from my family to yours.
