Framedrum Workshop Practice Materials
Layne Redmond Wow, what great workshops this fall, first LA, then Santa Barbara, Esalen, Rowe, Melbourne, FL, and last weekend the Comfort Zone!  And there's still more to come -- Tuesday evening in Gainesville, FL, Nathan Ells and I are doing a short intro for the artist Alex Grey's lecture.  Next week is PAS, the big percussion conference in Indianapolis, I'm totally excited about teaching a clinic fusing Brazilian and Mediterranean percussion with some great backup drummers, Professor Julie Hill and her students and Rafael Pereira, a great pandeiro player.  Also if you are going check Rajna Swaminathan's Mrudangam clinic on Friday at 2 pm. She's breaking the glass ceiling for women Mrudangam players!   Then Nov. 20 - 22, Intermediate - Advanced Bee Priestess frame drum workshop in Twin Lakes, MI.  Lots of drumming beekeepers will be there!

So those of you attending the retreats know I promised to send you a review of the things we worked on so you could continue practicing.  Rowe drummers -- I could not find my notes anywhere so if anything is missing let me know!

There were beginning and more advanced drumming workshops and a Golden Lotus Yoga/Chi Kung Chakra Balancing workshop.  The drumming reviews are in this email and next week I'll send out one on the yoga/chi kung energy practice workshop.  I'm sending the book recommendations that you requested in this email.  Thanks for the suggestion to make Amazon Associate links!  For those of you in Europe you'll probably want to check your local Amazon or bookstores.  I also urge you to look for these books at your local bookstores and if they don't have it they will be happy to get it for you.

And just to put this out here now, start exploring your pulse rate and the rhythms and tempos you are playing with a heart rate monitor, this has been an amazing revelation for me.  More info below.

We're in the planning stages for a retreat called Passing On the Teachings, for students who have been studying with me for a long time and other frame drum teachers interested in the style of teaching that I have developed.
INTRO TO THE FRAME DRUM

BASIC STROKES:

K - Kah, earth element, hand hits and sticks to drum

D - Doum, water element, whole index finger hits the head and bounces off

T - Tak, fire element, tip of 4th finger, the ring finger, hits the rim and sticks

C - Cha, air element, palm of hand below fingers hits the rim of the drum, not the head.

t - is tick, space element, a sound on the jingle made with the fourth finger.   

Remember to keep the thumb of the playing hand pointing up and the hand open.    In the following exercises count the thumb as 1, index finger as 2, middle finger as 3, ring finger as 4 and little finger is 5. This material is written with the assumption that the dominant hand is the right.

Jingle practices: Using the fourth fingers, of the right and left hands, the first exercise is right, left, right, left, continuously. Second exercise is the fourth, third and second finger of the right hand and fourth finger of left hand. This is the roll exercise and it goes right, right, right, left. Then the paradidle practice, right, left, right, right, left, right, left, left.

Had a great question from the Melbourne group about the cross walking that we do while we are playing.  Crossing the center line of the body creates more coherence between the two hemispheres of the brain and dramatically speeds up our learning time.  On a count of four, step right on one, then cross the left foot in front of the right foot for two, then the left foot to the left side for three and the right foot crosses in front of the left for four.  Got it?!!!   Look here to see this in action. 

By the way that's Deb and Hollie with me at Kripalu for the beginners workshop.  We'll be back there Dec. 4 - 6.  We're playing the Moroccan Samba rhythm.

Remember you are still walking in four under that even though it is a rhythm in six.

My tambourine plays that rhythm on The Cult Table on my cd, The Wave of Bliss.  Good to practice the bell pattern with that, although it is semi fast.

And here is the Omolu Bell pattern that we played on our chopsticks and sang.  Remember he is the Afro-Brazilian god of healing and death and syncretized with Saint Lazarus.

MORE ADVANCED FRAME DRUMMING FOR TAMBOURINE AND BELL

We covered some of this in the workshops and it is also the material I'll be teaching in my clinic at PASIC, the Percussive Arts Society International Conference, next Friday, Nov. 13 at 9 am: 

                 Fusing Brazilian and Mediterranean Rhythms

This is the basic Tenfold rhythm.  There is an instructional cd based on this rhythm and the cut from Trance Union, titled Tenfold.  We have just gotten Trance Union manufactured again as a cd and it is still available through CD Baby as a download.  If you're just starting out make sure you have worked your way through the Mastering Odd Times CD before you jump to the ten patterns.

Here's my Brazilian band riffing on this pattern and then I go back and forth between Tenfold and this pattern.  Also check the walking pattern it is the same as I described above.

SPLIT HAND TECHNIQUE

During the workshops, I taught this mostly on tambourine to strengthen your hand and arm for all of your strokes.  But it is best to learn it on a frame drum in sitting position.  Here's my instruction on split hand technique.

And here is N. Scott Robinson showing how to do this technique from the classical South Indian perspective. 

Here is Latha Ramachar, one of South India's only female performers on kanjira in the traditional musical setting in which this instrument is used.

And the key to making this program work is getting your heart rate monitor.  Really, I'm dead serious on this.  Develop your relationship with your pulse!!  It has been a revelation to tune into the different states of my heartbeat and how I feel during those states.  Drummers, you get this right??!!! 

I got the simplest, least expensive, heart pulse monitor, the Polar FS1 Heart Rate Monitor Watch.  But there are all kinds of more fancy ones, research it a bit.  You can start monitoring your pulse rate while you are playing different rhythms at different tempos and explore how that makes you feel.  It will change everything about your playing.

I think everyone concerned about our individual and community health should read this book, Anticancer.  It doesn't matter if you are worried about cancer or not -- this details what has happened to our food supply and environment and what we can do it about it every time we eat.  It is one of my main guides as I recover from my own bout with a malignant tumor and create a new lifestyle.  He's an MD who has gone through two bouts of brain cancer.  It is just such an excellent book.

June 2010, Pilgrimage to Greece and Cyprus

In Cyprus two weekend workshops:

Advanced Workshop for experienced Frame Drummers (must be confirmed with Layne Redmond for this workshop) and an Intro Level Frame Drum Workshop.
 

Join a group of Cypriot women and men to study the frame drum and the meditation practices of the ancient Bee Priestesses.  We'll also visit the great museums of Cyprus and the sacred sites of Aphrodite.  We will be a small group so contact us early!  If you are planning on attending the drumming retreat in Cyprus you must come with an appropriate Middle Eastern Style tambourine and for the advanced workshop you will also need a tar.

Possible extension of trip:

SHAMANIC TOUR OF THE ORACULAR SITES OF GREECE

We are in the planning stages for a pilgrimage to Greece and Cyprus. The Cyprus part will definitely happen and if all goes well we will go to the mainland of Greece to the oracular sites and visit the great museums of Athens.
