Young Resident Supports NICU
A year of saving goes to support local babies
| |
It's never too early to understand the impact of philanthropy. Maxx Merlo, age 7, proved that when he recently donated all his savings to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital's new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Accompanied by his parents John and Donna Merlo, the young Valencia resident recently presented his donation to Diana Vose, president of the hospital's Foundation.
"We were looking for something that would make a local impact and the NICU does that," John said. "I knew about the positive impact Henry Mayo's Foundation had in the community through local articles. And I knew they must be doing something right."
John and Donna Merlo encourage their children to give back. When Maxx reached his goal of $110 after a year of saving, John matched it. John passed along to Maxx what he learned from his own father-giving back.
"He started saving about a year ago," John said. "He was very persistent and saved from several special occasions.
"He has a giving heart and wanted his gift to make an impact. With the NICU, he understands where his money is going." Click here to read the full story.

Wine Fundraiser a Huge Success!
| |
Nursing staff from Henry Mayo's Women's Services Unit organized a successful fundraiser at Roman Holiday Wine lounge in December to benefit the NICU. The local band Sierra Highway performed for a packed audience, with all proceeds benefiting the tiniest of patients in our local community.
"When infants are transferred to another hospital for medical reasons, it breaks our heart to see them separated them from their mommies, daddies, siblings and the community," said Catherine Schallert- Espinoza, RN, Women's Services unit at Henry Mayo. "All of the staff in our unit is so very excited to support our new NICU, as are our volunteers."
There are many ways to continue to support our first-ever local NICU. To find out how you can help, please click here.
