"Thanks to My Dedicated Hospital Team"

For Patti Martin it all started on March 29, 2011, when for no apparent reason she passed out at her home.

By the time paramedics arrived, Martin was unresponsive, according to her husband Carl. "There were no real warning signs," he said.

Paramedics believed it looked like a stroke and Martin was transported to Henry Mayo's emergency room where she was treated immediately by a highly-trained team of caregivers. She was diagnosed with a ruptured aneurysm.

"I did not know Henry Mayo was a stroke trauma center. When we got there, it seemed there was a cast of thousands," Pike said. "They had her on the CAT scan immediately and all the right people were there at the right place at the right time."

Martin and Pike, who have lived in Valencia for 33 years, recently visited Henry Mayo to thank the people who saved her life.

New O.R. Opens

Another Expansion Plan Milestone

New OR

Henry Mayo has completed another component of its expansion plan-the surgical department's (OR) expansion and renovation--designed to accommodate the growing healthcare needs of our patients and community and providing first-rate surgical care.

Following approval by the California Department of Public Health, our newly constructed inpatient OR, was placed in operation in October. The OR expansion includes a new state-of-the art operating room--a fully integrated laparoscopic theater, allowing the surgical staff to coordinate procedures from central control stations. In addition, there are two more recovery stations, a remodel of the physicians' and nurses' lounges and locker rooms, and the comprehensive renovation of the current Gastrointestinal (GI) Lab.

The expansion will accommodate increased surgery cases and complexities, allow for easier access and maneuverability, and will include advanced technological and mechanical upgrades.

"This long and complex project has been the recipient of excellent architectural and engineering design, responsive construction contracting and great coordination among many key people," said Roger Seaver, president and CEO at Henry Mayo. "At this time we are pleased to report that the room effectively increases our surgical capacity by 33%. Thank you to all involved for bringing this project online for the benefit of our healthcare delivery mission in the Santa Clarita Valley."

The addition of the new OR brings the surgical department's total operating rooms to nine -five inpatient ORs in the main hospital (including one dedicated to C-Sections) and four outpatient ORs in the Outpatient Surgery Center.

Patti Martin Recovers from Brain Aneurysm

Thanks to Dedicated Hospital Team

"They had her on the CATscan immediately and all the right people were there at the right place at the right time."

Later that day, Martin was moved to the ICU and two days later she underwent brain surgery for a ruptured brain aneurysm. She spent about two weeks in the ICU and on April 14 she was transferred to the acute rehabilitation center (ARU) where she remained for treatment until May 4.

Martin and Pike, who have lived in Valencia for 33 years, recently visited Henry Mayo. She wanted to meet the people who took care of her. She had no memory of her time in the ICU. Pike was especially grateful to the couple's primary care physician Lakhbinder Dhanda, MD, who communicated daily with them about what was happening. Pike also commented on the exceptional care they received from Omaran Abdeen, MD, and the ICU nursing staff.

"I was very impressed with the ICU," Pike said. "There seemed to be a real team spirit and I felt that the ICU was focused on the patient and Patti got the ultimate care there. Dr. Liker was Patti's neurosurgeon and I felt very comfortable with him. He had great communication and explained what was happening."

The couple was impressed with the ARU's staff and their positive attitude.

"They would ask her 'do you think you can do the impossible' and she said she would try," Pike said. "I think it is satisfying for them to see their good results through her progress."

"I feel 97 percent myself and do almost everything I did before I went into the hospital," Martin said. "I'm driving and volunteering for the American Cancer Society and at the zoo. I'm an avid reader and I have gotten into it again. And I'm walking and exercising."
