|Hospital Begins Preparation For Parking Structure and Helipad Construction|
Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital will begin site preparation for the construction of a much-needed parking structure and trauma center helipad the week of April 19, 2010 in order to improve facility access and emergency care. Fencing will be erected on the site at the corner of McBean Parkway at Avenida Navarre where the new parking structure will be constructed and ground preparations will commence shortly thereafter. The new parking structure will provide 750 spaces on the hospital campus, an increase of 314 spaces and the helipad will allow the hospital to retain its designation as the only trauma center serving the Santa Clarita Valley and surrounding area. The structure and helipad should be completed in approximately one year.
Alternative parking arrangements have begun for hospital staff, volunteers and students to ensure visitors, patients and the community are not impacted by the temporary absence of parking spots during construction. During parking structure and helipad construction, day time hospital staff will park in a dedicated lot at the Westfield Town Center on Monday through Friday and continuous and complimentary shuttles will be provided to bring staff directly to the hospital campus. Patients, visitors, physicians, 12-hour and weekend staff will continue to park on the hospital's campus.
"We want to ensure that impacts to our clients and visitors are minimal during this and subsequent construction phases of the master plan." said Roger Seaver, President and Chief Executive Officer for Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. "However, we also want to ensure our staff has safe and secure parking with transportation to and from the hospital while we are expanding the campus to better serve our community."
|Neighborhood Parking Patrol Underway
|Henry Mayo has undertaken a process to monitor the Valencia neighborhood adjacent to the hospital to ensure that hospital employees honor the hospital's agreement with the local community to not park on nearby residential streets.
David Hernandez, from the hospital's imaging department has been dubbed one of two "neighborhood parking patrol guys" and is stationed on the south side of McBean parkway at Avenida Navarre. His counterpart, Sevan Aghazarian also mans a similar post at McBean and Orchard Village Road. The two work a daily, 3-hour shift each morning at their temporary posts from 6:45-9:45 am before reporting to their "regular work" in the Radiology Department. It appears Hernandez's presence in the neighborhood has already had a positive affect: shortly after David manned his post on his first morning, he was approached by a neighbor - a local resident who was out for his morning run. The neighbor thanked Hernandez for being there. "He said he respected the hospital for what we were doing to help ensure cars would not be parked on his street, and he thanked me," Hernandez said. "I think what we're doing here is important, and it's good to know that neighbors appreciate it," Hernandez said. Hernandez has had to ask a few Henry Mayo employees to return to their cars and remove them from the local streets, explaining that it's for the safety concerns of all - employees and residents alike - and to help maintain the integrity of the hospital's Master Plan agreement with the community. "I feel bad having to ask them to move their cars, but everyone seems to understand," he said.
