But we must do so under a new financial model and show design.
The current financial and economic climate, along with reduced corporate sponsorships, presents a stark challenge. To be blunt: We struggle to cover the cost of producing the Show. After great consideration and lengthy discussion over the past several weeks with many long term supporters, past Show chairs, volunteers and participants, we have concluded that we need to take a sabbatical and re-examine how best to continue our legacy. To that end, we have appointed three planning committees to:
-
Study the Flower Show model to determine how it might be restructured to meet the interests of its devoted audience, while being fiscally viable and sustainable. We will examine financial, sponsorship, as well as content issues.
-
Consider appropriate and relevant interim activities and events, (e.g. possible mini-Flower shows during 2010) as we work toward a reincarnation of the Southeaster Flower Show in 2011.
-
Develop a plan and program to raise funds (via events, etc), specifically earmarked for our next Show.
Marsha Webb, Chair of our Board's Flower Show Committee, is overseeing this strategic planning. Please contact her if you are interested in serving (see attached exhibit for those who've already signed up to help). * * * One of the reasons that we founded the Southeastern Horticultural society in the first place ... was to ensure broader exposure and extended reach & relevance for the Flower Show. We continue to subscribe to that view. Frankly, producing a juried, competitive flower show is integral to our mission. So while it is not (financially) responsible for us to have a Show in 2010 - until we have the chance for mid-course corrections, building on our strengths, addressing areas for improvement - we look forward to 2011. We look forward to, and appreciate, your help in creating this fresh vision. The Southeastern Horticultural Society is moving forward with many exciting programs, educating the community on preserving the natural environment, celebrating the beauty in horticulture.
Your ongoing support is invaluable. Now, more than ever, we need it. If you haven't joined, please consider doing so ... and have a hand in helping us grow. With appreciation
