Greetings!

Summer is here!  I believe the temperature is supposed to hit 70 degrees today, and I am very excited to feel a little sunshine coming through our windows.
As you all know by now, this summer our office will be closed for the month of July for summer break.  We will be checking the main voicemail box once a week, so if you have any urgent and time-sensitive matters, please leave them on that voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as possible. Otherwise, we will look forward to connecting with you again in August!

I hope you all enjoy the summer season - I know I'm especially looking forward to the local raspberry crop being ready to pick. There is nothing like a perfectly ripe raspberry!

All my best,

Rachel

Online Resource for English Language and Reading Practice: USA Learns
By Summer Ostlund, ELL Coordinator

U.S.A. Learns is an excellent free online resource for language learners to practice English listening, speaking and reading skills or for native speaking learners to practice reading. Lessons are related to real-life learner goals and interests such as work, family, health, housing and community. These beginning to intermediate level lessons incorporate video, pictures, music, stories, games, quizzes, writing prompts and more which makes it very interactive.

U.S.A. Learns can be used in a variety of ways. Use it during tutoring sessions with your learner as a way to practice English, reading or computer skills. Or demonstrate how to use it with your learner so they feel comfortable accessing it at home or at the library in their free time. Even if you don't have access to a computer during sessions, it may provide new ideas for what to incorporate in your lessons such as appropriate topics, stories to print out and use in a lesson and follow-up games and comprehension quizzes.
In the U.S.A. Learns beginning level lessons, learners follow along as Mrs. Marquez, the friendly instructor, teaches English vocabulary and grammar.

English Language Learner/Tutor Spotlight
Lauren and Thuy

WLC ELL Program | Lauren and Thuy's story
WLC ELL Program | Lauren and Thuy's story

We asked Lauren (an ELL Tutor) and Thuy (an English Language Learner) to answer a few questions about their tutoring experience. Here is what they had to say.

ELL Tutor: Lauren

What have been some of the most challenging and rewarding aspects about being a tutor?
One challenge in tutoring has been finding creative ways to tackle the same issue, so the learner doesn't feel bored or overwhelmed. The most rewarding part of being a tutor is seeing the way the things we work on make a real difference in the everyday life of the learner. The areas we focus on - from pronunciation to grammar - hugely impact the learner's success and comfort at their job or in other interaction with people in the community. Feeling more confident and able to express themselves affects their quality of life in a really fundamental way.

Why is the Whatcom Literacy Council important to the community?
Whatcom Literacy Council provides an invaluable service. Not only do they provide the means for learners to find tutors who are a good match so success stories can be created, WLC also enriches the lives of both tutor and learner by fostering connections between people who are able to find how much in common they have.

What advice would you give someone who is just starting the tutoring process?
I would tell a new tutor to reach out whenever they feel "stuck" so that someone's new ideas and thoughts can keep you and your learner moving forward. I would also encourage new tutors to ask their learner frequently how they are doing outside the sessions - how they are doing a work, with their children, etc. - and in what ways they still face challenges. This will not only keep you focused, but also let you revel in your learner's success and maintain excitement about the very real ways you are making a difference.
