Greetings! |
Welcome to our August/September tutor newsletter! I hope you have been enjoying the summer. Typically things slow down around WLC for the summer, but this year seems to be a bit of an exception as we have been kept busy with a pretty steady stream of new learners. As our waiting list grows longer, we are turning our attention to recruiting some new tutors this fall, so we can get all of these new learners matched with tutors as soon as possible!
With that in mind, would you please help us spread the word about our upcoming Open House on Wednesday, September 15, at 5pm at the Bellingham Public Library? This is a great chance for people to learn more about becoming a tutor, meet the entire WLC staff and enjoy refreshments! We will go over the different volunteer options and invite anyone who is interested in moving forward in the process to sign up for an interview with one of our staff members. This is our biggest tutor recruitment effort of the year and I thank you for helping us to spread the word!
All my best,
Rachel Myers
Executive Director

All E.L.L. tutors please consider doing some small group classes! I'm looking for several volunteers to assist and lead small groups in local elementary schools, churches and housing cooperatives. These classes are once a week only and require prep from the lead facilitator and on-site assistance from the other volunteers. Typical class times will be on a weekday somewhere between 5 p.m - 8 p.m. We encourage teams of three facilitators per site to accommodate multi-levels of learner ability and to compensate for vacation and sick leave coverage. We strongly encourage you to continue your one-to-one tutoring, but if you find yourself with extra time to spare and you'd like to try working/assisting in groups, please contact me directly via e-mail at gina@whatcomliteracy.org or by calling 647.3264 ext.102 and sign up for our upcoming information session which will take place on Monday, September 15th from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Thanks Valued Partners! by Summer Ostlund, ELL Coordinator |
This month we would like to say a big "thank you!" to our partners around Whatcom County who provide free spaces for our tutor and learner pairs to meet. Having an appropriate place to tutor and learn is a crucial aspect of the valuable work being done. Pairs have a variety of different needs when it comes to a tutoring site. Some prefer a quiet, classroom-type environment, while others prefer a more social location such as a coffee shop. We work with libraries, schools, churches, non-profit organizations and businesses to provide locations throughout the day from early morning to late in the evening. During the matching process when a tutor and learner are being placed, we, as coordinators, take into consideration location, time availability and environment to suggest a site that would be a good fit. We then follow up with the contact from the partner entity to see if a space is indeed available. We try to spread pairs evenly at different sites so as not to over-use any specific location. We are very appreciative of the range of sites that have been made available over the years for pairs to meet and work toward learner's literacy and language learning goals. In order to make decisions about placement of pairs at sites, it is important to have accurate and current information about each location. We would like to thank three of our volunteers who have spent time this summer assisting us in this process by making site visits and updating our site book. Thank you to Russell Ritchie, Yoojung Kim and Beth Parker. Thank you to the following partners that have provided space for tutor/learner pairs to meet this year!

Verizon Thinkfinity Revisited | Tutors, did any of you take the time to complete one of the Verizon Courses this summer? If so, let us know what you thought of the content and if you are planning on applying any new strategies via e-mail. Send your thoughts to gina@whatcomliteracy.org A lot of the Culture and English Language Learners course was a refresher, but I found some terrific material on instructional approaches and culturally sensitive resources. I'd recommend this online class to tutors wanting to better address the cultural aspects of their learner(s).
