Church Covenant

Love is the doctrine of this church,

The quest of truth its sacrament,
And service its prayer.

To dwell together in peace,
To seek knowledge in freedom,

To serve human need,

To the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the Divine -

Thus do we covenant with each other and with God.

Weekly Meditation

WoodChalice

I am dust particles in sunlight.  I am the round sun.... I am morning mist, and the breathing of evening.  I am wind in the top of a grove, and surf on the cliff.  I am all orders of being, the circling galaxy, the evolutionary intelligence, the lift and the falling away. What is, what isn't.... You the one in all, say who I am. Say, 'I am You.'

Leadership for Changing our Thinking and Practice about Giving
For decades we, as individuals, have not had to pay our fair share of the cost of operating this congregation. Our endowments have paid most of the bills. However, with the downturn in the economy, and a significant decrease in investment income, we are facing new economic realities. For the first time in a very long time, it really matters what you give.

As we prepare to go into our financial pledge drive, we need an energetic and creative leader to step forward to help us change, significantly, our thinking and practice about giving. If you have a strong commitment to this church, have had success as a fundraiser, and have a spirit and practice of generosity, this congregation has a ministry of leadership for you. If interested in learning more, please contact the Parish Minister.

Worship

Next weekend the Rev. Vann Knight will be preaching and the sermon title will be The Art of Letting Go.

Music

This week's anthem is a setting of a Buddhist text by Ian Riddell, one of our younger Unitarian Universalist composers. The text is simple and repetitive - a mantra of sorts: "May I be filled with loving kindness, May I be well. May I be peaceful and at ease, May I be whole." The words are then repeated with "You" and then "We". The accompaniment will be improvised on West African harp by our Director of Music, and Bobbie Hill and Dan Meyers will lead the choir. We'll also sing the hymns "Here We Have Gathered," "Once When My Soul Was Passion Free," and "Just as Long as I Have Breath". Organ music will be works by Fischer, Brahms and Bach, and played by Laura Hargrove.

Religious Education

Crib Room: Loving care provided for children six months through three years old.  Caregivers: Jayne Leahy and Louise Gallo

Preschool: With story, worship, and activities children explore February holidays at church and beyond.  Led by preschool teacher Patty Lowell.

Workshop Rotation for Kindergarten thru 6th Grade: The themes being explored are stories of Jesus and the Transformational Power of Love.

  • Kindergarten:  The challenges of love and compassion are examined in Social Action (Living the Story) with materials from "Respect for All" and some of our own ideas about reaching out across differences.
  • 1st & 2nd Grades:  The Tree of Zaccheus is created in Art (Seeing the Story) with those attributes of goodness which may be hidden among the leaves, or deep within a human heart.
  • 3rd & 4th Grades: The story of Zaccheus is told in Drama (Telling the Story) with special sets created by this workshop.  We imagine what the scene must have looked like in the time before jumbotrons.
  • 5th & 6th Grades:  The story of Zaccheus is explored in Worship (Celebrating the Story) with song and movement, ending with a celebratory 'tea' with Zaccheus and a lot of wondering about life in the 'Holy Land' then and now.

Our Whole Lives for 7th & 8th Grades:  A faith-based comprehensive sexual education program.  The program runs until late spring.

Coming of Age for 9th, 10th and 11th Grades:  They are preparing for their worship service on March 8th.

Frozen Pickles for all junior high school youth meets next on February 22nd ; hosting Fellowship hour and planning March's retro prom fund raising event.

Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU) for all senior high school youth meets next on February 22nd, from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m., to finalize plans for the March skiing weekend.

Learning About Today's Technology
Today's technology is complicated and hard to keep up with. New ways of communicating are developing constantly. No worries! The high school Coming of Age class will be holding another technology class February 22 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is your chance to learn how to use the latest technology from the people that know it best and use it everyday. We will work with laptops to show you how to burn CDs, use thumb drives, download music, and also how to use social networking sites, email, and search engines while keeping your computer safe from viruses. We will also teach you how to text message with various types of cell phones and when it can be better than calling somebody on the phone. This class is open to anybody who wants to learn. So join the class, eat a little food, and get to know about the latest technology! Speak to Doreen Hodgkin or email her at dhodgkin@ccs.neu.edu if you haven't registered for workshops already.
