broadbandBroadband and the rural economy
Slow Broadband Speed
It is estimated that over 2 million people in the UK live in what is termed a broadband "not spot" or receive speeds less than 2 Mbps. In the last month I have come across five businesses who are now affected by this lack of service.

One  business which I recently visited had a very poor connection of 24 kbps and needed to know what options they had in order to improve they're email capability. BT Openreach wanted £8,400 to upgrade the line, this was rejected. The solution we finally provided was a 2-way satellite link for £17.99 /month which achieved a 512k connection.

In 2003 the Welsh Assembly Government set up the Broadband Wales Observatory which did provide some support and research into broadband provisioning across Wales. The project ceased in 2007, however you can still register your business on both the Welsh Assembly Government and UK Notspot registers.

Prince Charles  entered the arena on the plight of the rural economy as he warned of a countryside left in a "broadband dessert". The Welsh Assembly Government is currently commited to providing a 512k broadband service throughout Wales and central Government hopes to provide a minimum of 2mb throughout the UK by 2012

So what steps can you take to improve your existing broadband connection, click here for some things you can try...

On a final note, I hope that rural Wales doesn't end up in a similar situation to parts of South Africa for its data transfer, have a look at this amusing news item.
emailIs E-mail controlling you?
E-Mail stressE-mail has revolutionised our lives but can you have too much of a good thing? Two million e-mails are sent every second and now companies are hiring consultants to teach their staff how to cope with the daily avalanche in their inboxes.

We can spend up to half our working day going through our inbox, leaving us tired, frustrated and unproductive. A recent study found one-third of office workers suffer from e-mail stress. One FTSE firm estimated that dealing with pointless e-mails cost it £39m a year.

Here are some tips to follow...

Invest in a spam filter.
Stop your inbox clogging up with pointless emails and in some cases potentially dangerous emails by upgrading your spam filter. Contact us if you want to know more about this.

Target your e-mail.
One of the most annoying things about e-mail is the sheer number of messages we receive that don't contain information intended for the recipient. Do you need to include everyone in the cc box? Remember a cc is there to provide information to more than one person and you should only use it for that purpose. Don't copy people in unnecessarily.

Write more carefully.
It vastly increases the chance that whatever it is you want to get done will get done in a single email. Be concise and clear!

Reduce interruptions.
Simply by changing the way your staff have their e-mail application set up, you can start to reduce some of the stress related to receiving emails continuously throughout the day.
For instance you can remove the pop-ups that alert you when you receive an email, or set up longer time intervals for updating your inbox with new mail.

ECDL has a training module that will help you to manage your emails more efficiently.
