As many of you may know (or may not know) we have two different Facebook pages. We have the CCSA page geared towards studios and the Paint Your Own Pottery page for consumers. If you haven't "Liked" these pages yet do it now - I'll wait...

Welcome back! Ok, so for the consumer page we've decided to feature a different CCSA studio every day! But we need your help. The first thing you need to do is get your fans to "Like" the consumer page. This way we are reaching YOUR customers and many of their friends! Second, we need info about your studio. We don't want to guess what you consider important & newsworthy about your business so you will need to send me the information below in an email to
ccsa.studios@gmail.com

Things to send in the email:

  • Studio name
  • Location
  • Your name (this won't be posted - unless you want it to be)
  • Contact phone number (this won't be posted - it's in case I have a question)
  • A link to your business FB page
  • A link to your website
  • A picture to include in the post - this can be of your studio, a piece for an upcoming event, a copy of a flyer - whatever! Picture requirements: jpg file, file size greater than 100k and less than 250k and remember to send as an attachment
  • The news you want to have posted - are you moving? have you added a new class? is it time to book summer camps? etc.
  • Is there a specific date you'd like to be featured?
  • If you want specific wording - let us know!
  • Anything else you think you should include

Ok, that's it for now. So start getting your customers to "Like" the page - we'll start showcasing studios soon. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Podcasting for Fun and Profit

Podcasting was inspired by the Apple Computer Corporation's iPod. Podcasts can be downloaded to an MP3 player or computer for later listening at your convenience. Podcasting makes use of the Internet's Real Simple Syndication (RSS) standard. It differs from broadcasting and webcasting in the way that content is published and transmitted via the Web. Instead of a central audio stream, podcasting sends audio content directly to an iPod or other MP3 player.

How can we use this technology to increase revenues?

  • You can easily create informational podcasts to put on your website.
  • Create how-to instructions for simple painting techniques.
  • Record a welcome-to-our-website message with your current news updates such as camp programs.
  • Make a recording of the daily specials you offer in your studio.
  • Send out a Constant Contact emailing to your customers with a link to a recording to promote an event.
  • Customers can use their favorite "Podcaster" such as an iPod to subscribe to your RSS feed. You get return customers!

It is very simple to start creating your own podcasts. You just need a microphone (preferably a headset rather than your computer speakers) and some software. Voice recording software is free and downloadable. Visit http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and download AudacityŽ to install on your computer. You can also host your podcast for free. Visit this link for a list of free RSS aggregators to choose from: http://downloadsquad.switched.com/tag/aggregator/.

Now that you have your software downloaded you should look at some quick tips to get you started. Type the following into your browser for a downloadable PowerPoint of the process: audacity.sourceforge.net/Audacity_High_School.ppt. It's always a good idea to storyboard or outline your thoughts so that you have a plan. Draft what you want to say if you prefer working from a script, but remember to keep it simple and relaxed. You can edit out some of the uhms and uhs with Audacity if you need to, along with sweetening up the sound with the noise removal tool. There are many websites that have downloadable music. Try the Creative Commons website for licensed work at http://search.creativecommons.org/. If you want to check out some podcasts for ideas, try iTunes or http://www.podbean.com/podcasts.

Podcasts aren't specific to any one business or country. They are another avenue for getting your message to your customers at their convenience. Podcasts are easy to create with a minimum investment and worth adding to your business marketing mix. Podcasts increase your "marketing reach and visibility, improve sales, open a regular line of communication with your customer subscribers," and increase customer loyalty by offering value added content to your website. How can you afford not to?

Till next time . . .

Convention Name Badge Holder

Do you have a name badge holder from previous conventions?  If you do, we need them! To help control costs we try to collect the name badges at the end of convention so we con reuse them the following year.  At convention in Birmingham I heard many people say that they had several at home and many of you have mailed them to Susan.  If you have any of the CCSA badge holders please send them to Susan at 1099 E. Champlain Suite A 143, Fresno, CA 93720.
Be A Part Of Convention
MaryLiz Curtin will be the keynote speaker at this year's convention and will also be teaching a class: Merchandising Magic: Paint your store fabulous!

We want this class to feature PYOP studios and the problems that face you everyday.  To be able to do this we need your help. In the process you could see you store on the big screen and get some great advice for those problem areas in your studio or maybe some praise on a fantastic job you have done.

Do you have an example of a great display from your studio? A problem you would like to address? Send it to Mary Liz at maryliz@leonandlulu.com and you may see your studio on the big screen!

Susan needs YOU!
Hosting a convention is lots of work, requires long hours and can not be done without wonderful volunteers.  The CCSA Convention in Austin is no different.  The CCSA has two staff members and we need your help to make the Convention a success.  If you are willing to donate a couple of hours during the convention we would greatly appreciate it.  Help is needed at the Registration Desk and Great Shapes Check In on Friday and Saturday and then for Great Shapes transport and display on Sunday.  We will also need volunteers for Raffle Ticket Sales throughout the event.  On the evening of the Dinner Auction  we will need help with the Silent Auction, Stage Assistants, Runners, check out attendants and..... the best job of all: CLEAN UP Committee!

So if you are willing to donate a couple of hours during your time at the CCSA Austin Convention please contact Susan.  susan@ccsaonline.com or 888-291-2272 #4

From the Executive Director

April has been an incredibly busy month for the CCSA. The new website is up, online registration for convention has started, the annual report has been published, our summer edition for the CCSA Today has gone to the printers and we are wrapping up preparation for the Midwest and International Regional events.

I have gotten some great feedback on the website and the annual report, and I thank you for taking the time to send me emails with your thoughts. We want to make this website user friendly and continue to add new information that everyone can use.

The CCSA Today Summer Edition should mail on or before May 4th and this is a great issue. We have some incredible volunteers that work on the magazine and for this edition we had some guest writers, as well. So start checking your mail for the magazine around May 11th or later.

If you have not signed up for the Midwest or International Regional it is NOT too late. Both of these events are going to be one to remember. The suppliers have gone all out with projects and donated items for the goody bags. You will leave these events with great projects that you can implement in your studio immediately and business classes to help you grow your business. It is a great time to talk with other studio owners one-on-one and share ideas.

This newsletter is packed full of information so please make sure you read all the articles so you are up to date with all the changes and activity within the CCSA.

Website Info Everyone Needs to Know!

CCSAONLINE.COM has a new look.  That's right, we have completely revamped our website.  Allof Websitethe great information from our old site  is still there, sobe sure to check out the technical, marketing and studio operations tabs - you never know what little gem you may have forgotten about. There are some great new aspects to the website as well - an online store, online convention sign-up and a new studio locator, just to name a few.  Unfortunately, I won't be able to take you through the entire site in the small amount of space available here, but let's hit the highlights.

So, you're on the new site - what do you do first?  Start by going to the Membership tab, then select Manage My Membership to edit your profile.  The data provided in the My Profile section is where the Studio Locator will draw its information.  You will want to upload a picture (size: 160px2) that represents your company because this will be displayed when a customer searches the studio locator.  Next, select Edit Profile - if you haven't already, go ahead and edit your password.  Look through all the details make sure everything is correct. Anything you don't want displayed can be hidden by clicking on the "Private" check box to the left of the line you want to hide - just don't click the very top box on the "Hide Profile from Search Results" or your studio will not show up on the locator.  One of the benefits of the new site is that YOU have complete control of the information that is displayed for your company on the studio locator.  For more detailed information regarding the studio locator and profile items, as well as information on the Chat Forum Profile, check out this topic in the new chat forum:  http://www.ccsaonline.com/index.php?option=com_ccboard&view=postlist&forum=36&topic=55&Itemid=

Another benefit of the new site is the ability to perform various online orders and registrations any time of the day or night.  Visit the Online Store tab to order cd's, dvd's, custom marketing materials, etc. Renew your membership on the My Profile page. And, best of all, sign up for regionals and convention through the Convention/Events tab.  When you sign up for convention you are not just placing your order to attend convention, you are now going to be able to select the pre-con and convention classes you will attend.  Gone are the days of standing in line at convention to get tickets to attend a class.

The new Chat forum is now more fully integrated with the website and the link for it can be found in the Community tab.  The format is similar but does have some differences from what you are used to.  You will notice there are many new Forums to help better organize the posts that are created - already 50 new threads have been created.  Some features of the new chatter:

  • Board Index - this will take you to the main chat page
  • Latest Posts - clicking here will bring up the most recent 25 posts that have been created.  This is different from old chatter's New Posts which brought up all the threads that changed since you last logged in.  To ensure you don't miss a new thread/post, it is best if you went through the various forums.
  • Forum Profile - this is where you can enter your location and add a custom signature that will appear below all your posts.
  • My Posts - just like it says, here you'll find all the posts you have made on chat.
  • Pending Posts - this is not used and is simply a default setting with the program.  Our organization does not require posts to receive approval before being submitted.

The entering of Topics & Posts isn't too different from old chatter, but there are a few things I'd like to point out.  Replying to a post can either be done as a Quick Reply (a box found after the last post in that thread) which does not give you any formatting capabilities. You can also click on the Post Reply button, which gives you full formatting options as well as being able to attach a file and post a comment about that file.  Another option you have is to Subscribe &/or Favorite the Topic.

If you're wondering what happened to the old Chatter & Gallery, they haven't gone far.  We are working as quickly as possible to get those items archived so you will be able to search that wealth of knowledge. Be sure to keep your old Chatter login & password information.

Finally, a couple quick notes about the Manage My Membership area.  The My Community sub-tab is where you can find the new Gallery - New Photos.  Select the View All Photos to see the albums that have been created by users.  The My Profile tab will show you your connections (similar to your friends list on Facebook), allow you to create Circles (similar to Google+) and is where you can edit your Contact Preferences to control which emails you receive.  The Connections tab is where you can search for members either through Browse Dictionary or Advanced Search allowing you to add members to your connections (i.e. friends list).  My Features tab is where you create your albums and upload your pictures.  And the Inbox tab is where you send and receive private messages.

We hope you enjoy the new website and spend some time getting used to it.  We are hoping to run a webinar in the near future to go over the site in more depth and answer your questions.  In the meantime, if you have any problems or questions, please check the new chat to see if your question has been asked & answered. If you don't see it there, post it and we will get you the answer as quickly as possible.

Thanks, and happy chatting!
