This question provides the reminder of what Daddy-God requires of us to maintain the unity of fellowship in our relationships.
Let's examine the subject of forgiveness by using a resource from the Standard Commentary, COGIC Sunday School book &
Christian Scholar David Guzik;
Colossians 3:13 (KJ)-Forbearing one another and forgiving one another, if any man has a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you,
so also do ye.
NLT-You must make allowance for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you,
so you must forgive others.
Forbearing; (Current Offenses) The attitude of patience is demonstrated through our willingness to be patient with those who commit unbelievable and thoughtless acts, which includes all of us from time to time.
|
Do You Really Forgive?
Forgiveness; (Past Offenses) Forgiveness is a promise, made in response to repentance; to completely reconcile and put the offense out of one's mind which is the opposite of saying "I'll forgive but I won't forget."
When we humble ourselves in both seeking and granting forgiveness; our relationships will be blessed.
The promise of forgiveness, as with the pattern of Christ's forgiveness, is not made to the unrepentant, but to those who even show the slightest promise of repentance.
(Luke 17:3-4) 3)-- Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. (Rebuke--to admonish or charge sharply)
4- Even if he wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, forgive him.
If someone sins against us seven times in a day and keeps asking us to forgive them, we might think they are not really sincere. Yet Jesus commands us to forgive them and restore them.

Do You Really Forgive?
When someone sins against us, we should not pretend that it never happened. We need to rebuke that brother or sister in love. Love is the rule here because we obviously can't walk around keeping a record of every minor offense committed against us.
Although genuine forgiveness can't happen until there is repentance, we are not permitted to judge another's remorse. When the person who offended us repents, we must forgive them. One aspect of the Fruit of the Spirit is longsuffering (Galatians 5:22), and we need to be able to suffer long with the slights and petty offences that come our way in daily living.

|
What do we do with the person who has never repented? Do we forgive them? In a sense, we cannot forgive them without destroying the whole idea of what forgiveness is all about.
God does not forgive us apart from repentance; and when we are forgiven, all relationship is restored with Him.
Even if true forgiveness and reconciliation cannot be made because there is no recognition of wrong, we still cannot harbor the pain and bitterness of the offense in our heart.
The offended party must give it to the Lord God and make the promise of forgiveness unto God.
We must do what Jesus did in Luke 23:34 when He prayed Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do - We must commit our heart to God in Heaven, love our enemy and pray for them.

Joseph is a marvelous example of this. When he told his brothers who had hated him and sold him into slavery you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good (Genesis 50:20), he didn't come to that realization at that moment.
That was the state of his heart for a long time. But relationship could only really be restored after the brothers had repented and Joseph spoke healing, forgiving words to them and backed it up with actions.
We are told to forgive one another, after the pattern of Jesus' forgiveness towards us, who in His worst moment of agony and injustice said, "Father, forgive them" (Luke 23:34).
Likewise, Christ has forgiven each of us and paid the penalty for our sins with His own blood.
Ephesians 4:32-And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Lord, please forgive us when we have not forgiven!
From hence; we will be doers of Your Word!
