East Meets West

Alex and Linda Visit China

Mr. Hu

In late January, President Alex Holland and his wife, Linda Joy Stone, were guests of Mr. Hu Guochen of the Peoples Medical Publishing House in Beijing. Mr. Hu's company publishes a majority of the medical texts, including TCM, in China. It was a delightful visit and we hope to develop a successful East-West relationship.

Mr. & Mrs. Wang

Alex (in his gifted "emperor's jacket") and Linda also met with President Wang Zhihong and his wife of the Changchun University of Chinese Medicine. This TCM university of 10,000 students is located in Changchun, 534 miles northeast of Beijing. The Asian Institute and Changchun University are currently establishing a student/faculty exchange program. Alex will also be presenting a paper at the First International Symposium on TCM Manipulation Therapies in Jilin (outside Changchun) in late June.

These are very exciting times for the Asian Institute and the global influence of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The Asian Institute is pleased to have Alex, with his 27-year  teaching experience, be the instructor for this first in the serieProsperitys of TCM theory courses. This course is being conveniently offered on Saturday mornings. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to the historical and cultural contexts, as well as the philosophy and ideological systems in which Traditional Chinese Medicine evolved and took root. The following subjects will be covered in the Fundamental Principles course:

"Prosperity"

  • Yin-Yang theory
  • Vital substances (Qi, blood, jing, shen and body fluids)
  • Transformation of Qi
  • 8 Principles as a diagnostic tool
  • 5 Elements
  • Circadian rhythms--the flow of Qi
  • Causes of disease
  • Functions of the primary Zangfu organs--Heart, Liver, Lung, Spleen and Kidney
  • 6 curious organs

The class is open to the public for $400. If you want to apply this class towards a masters degree in acupuncture or Oriental medicine, the tuition cost would be $860.
