Happy New Year!

As we enter the Year of the Earth Ox, 2009 portends to be an auspicious one. The Ox, or Buffalo, symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work. With patience and diligence, social and economic obstacles can be overcome and bring a time of recovery, stability and growth. Ox year can bring healing both personally and collectively.

Historically, during challenging economic times, many people choose to return to school to establish a new career and reestablish themselves in their community. The growing field of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers the altruistic benefits of helping and healing while offering a lucrative profession. Being a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) allows one the flexibility of being independent, either as a sole practitioner or practicing within an integrative healthcare setting.

Acupuncture and TCM offer a healing path for many, both as a practitioner and as a patient. The Asian Institute is proud to be a leader in the education of this ancient art and timeless medicine.

In health and in service,

AIMS Logo    The Asian Institute's Logo: Open to Interpretation

Alex Holland conceived the logo of a stylized heartbeat to represent the Asian Institute. The physiological QRS T-wave represents life which symbolizes the ultimate mission of the Asian Institute: to provide for heart-centered living and healthcare. The image can also symbolize the four directions or represent a stylized mathematical formula that depicts all lines moving from and towards infinity. The symbol is beautiful in its simple calligraphic imagery and, yet, like the now famous yin-yang symbol, is multifaceted in its implications.

Health Care Reform

Healthcare reform is on many people's minds. As we sit at the brink of a new, more progressive administration that encourages public input, people are speaking out. There were many Obama-Biden Healthcare Reform Meetings held around the country in December. One was held at the Asian Institute sponsored by the Tucson Integrative Health Professionals.

The consensus was that the current for-profit "sick-care" system managed by pharmaceutical and insurance companies does not serve the public needs. In fact, the population has gotten sicker and more obese over the past 40 years and the cost of health care has increased exponentially. Therefore, it was proposed that a universal integrative and preventive healthcare system be implemented.

This means supplying healthcare for everyone that is not employer based and has no restrictions on pre-existing conditions. This means starting from the ground up in educating people on healthy habits, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles. This means starting this education in elementary school and moving forward all the way into the workplace. This means uniting hands with all healthcare providers, educators and holistic practitioners to create an integrative system that will educate and empower individuals.
