Gene Gardner Feb 2012

A Great Man & Colleague Retires

Good Luck Gene Gardner!

This year I had the pleasure of working with Gene Gardner, Wildlife Diversity Chief at Missouri Department of Conservation.  Gene has championed many causes for conservation over his esteemed career, but I'm sure the challenges and successes he experienced were nothing more than "all in a days work" from his perspective.  He is passionate about the outdoors and a true hero through advocacy, professional contribution and dedication to our natural resources.  Whether he is working, hunting,  or simply sharing his appreciation of the natural communities across Missouri, Gene is an example of a great leader and mentor.  I feel considerably fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from him and see the Teaming With Wildlife Coalition in action.

Many friends of conservation know and respect Gene....but if you had to guess what he has accomplished, I'm sure the list any of us would attribute to this good man cannot tell the whole story.    Please read the whole story and if you have a "good wish" to share with Gene for  a happy, healthy retirement please send it to Michelle McGrath at MDC.  Her email address is michelle.mcgrath@mdc.mo.gov or the mailing address:

Your Help is Needed to Save Funding for State and Tribal Wildlife Grant Programs

Once again the US House of Representatives has proposed a massive (50%) cut to the State and Tribal Wildlife Grants Program for the fiscal year starting in September.  This program has already been cut by over 30% since 2010.  We understand the fiscal constraints of the country and know everyone needs to do their part.  However this large and disproportionate cut to a successful programthat is preventing endangered species listings does not make economic sense.  We know that when a species has to be federally listed, costs skyrocket!  The last two years the US Senate has worked hard to restore funding to this program but only after they heard from the Teaming With Wildlife coalition. Please consider adding your organization's name to the attached letter to the Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Interior Appropriations Committee.  Time is of the essence so the deadline for signing on is August 17th

Send an email with your organization's name and state to mhumpert@fishwildlife.org

to sign on.  Help us reach our goal of at least 300 organizations by the deadline to send a strong statement of support for the program.  Thanks for all that you do to support fish and wildlife conservation.

Deadline:  August 17, 2012

Send an email with your organization's name and state to mhumpert@fishwildlife.org  to sign on.

Secratary of State Robin Carnahan Announces New State Archives Exhibit

A Legacy of Conservation

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan today announced the opening of a new exhibit, A Legacy of Conservation: The 75th Anniversary of the Missouri Department of Conservation. In development for over a year, the exhibit examines the rich history of conservation in Missouri by drawing from more than 400,000 Conservation Commission photographs, documents and publications, as well as materials provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Conservation Federation of Missouri. Most of the documents used are part of the collection of the Missouri State Archives, a division of Carnahan's office, and will be on display to the public for the very first time.

"The Missouri Department of Conservation provides an invaluable service by protecting and managing our forest, fish and wildlife resources and also by providing opportunities for Missourians to enjoy and learn about our state's many natural treasures," said Carnahan. "The opening of this exhibit allows our offices to come together to celebrate the history of this vital agency. I am pleased to share with Missourians some of the records held at the Archives, while also offering an engaging way to learn more about how the Missouri Department of Conservation has benefitted our state and its citizens."

A Legacy of Conservation provides a complete picture of the conservation movement in Missouri, from the 1895 establishment of the Missouri State Game and Fish Commission - the predecessor of today's Department of Conservation - to the present day. The role of the agency is explored, in terms of scientific research, propagation of fish and game, enforcement of game laws, forestry and public relations. The exhibit also examines Rudolf Bennit and Werner O. Nagel's landmark study of 1934, A Survey of the Resident Game and Furbearers of Missouri, which established the need for the Missouri Conservation Commission, as well as the Missouri Department of Conservation's long-term plan, Design for Conservation, implemented by the agency in 1971 to help meet the growing needs of the state's outdoor enthusiasts.

The exhibit will be unveiled at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, at the Kirkpatrick State Information Center in Jefferson City, where it will be on display through the end of 2012. Starting in January 2013, the exhibit will travel throughout Missouri. For more information about A Legacy of Conservation, or other Missouri State Archives traveling exhibits, please contact Greg Olson at 573-522-2705 or greg.olson@sos.mo.gov
