Mystic Plains COA Update
What a difference 2 1/2 years make! Since 2007, the Missouri Prairie Foundation has partnered with Premium Standard Farms (a large pork producer) to lease approximately 800 acres for grassland restoration in the Mystic Plains Conservation Opportunity Area. In January 2008, MPF and partners established a dormant-season native planting on a portion of this leased land. Frank Oberle visited the site this summer and was amazed by the diversity of plants and animals. "The amount of, and the diversity of, the forb [wildflower] component just marvel me. It was difficult for me to concentrate on anything while there other than the bird sounds and the buzz of insects feasting on the flowers. There were rabbits, pheasants and just about all kinds of grassland wildlife." See slideshows of Frank's before and after photos (January 2008 and July 2010).----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
