Missouri Teaming With Wildlife Coalition Hosts Smithville Lake Field Tour with Congressman Graves' Staff
On a sunny day in late June, the
Missouri Teaming With Wildlife Coalition had an opportunity to host Shawna
Searcy, Congressman Graves' Liberty, MO Field Representative, on a field tour
of the Smithville Lake Grassland Revitalization Project. Smithville Lake is a
7,000 acre Corps of Engineers reservoir 25 miles north of Kansas City. Much of
the land surrounding the lake is leased by the Clay County Department of Parks,
Recreation and Historic Sites for trails, recreation and open space. Read more. |

House Victory for Land and Water Conservation Fund!
Recall that we sent out a recent funding alert supporting fully funding the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). Thanks for all who called your representatives!
For the first time in over a decade, the House of Representatives passed a bill to fully dedicate the Land and Water Conservation Fund at its authorized level of $900 million a year! The House voted 209-193
to pass the CLEAR Act, H.R. 3534, an oil spill response bill, of which
LWCF funding was a significant component, mentioned by at least 26
Representatives in their floor remarks. Senate passage will be a far greater challenge, but this is a great step forward!
The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) was established by Congress
in 1965. The Act designated that a portion of receipts from offshore oil
and gas leases be placed into a fund annually for state and local
conservation, as well as for the protection of our national treasures
(parks, forest and wildlife areas). The LWCF program provides matching grants to
States and local governments for the acquisition and development of
public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. LWCF has a broad-based coalition of
support, including the National Parks and Recreation Association, The
Wilderness Society, and the Land Trust Alliance.

Funding Source: Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative (MoBCI) Grants
Deadline: September 30, 2010 Maximum: $20,000
One important
state funding source made possible with State Wildlife Grant funding is the
Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative (MoBCI) Grant Program. The Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative (MoBCI) serves as a conduit in
providing financial support to private and public organizations or to
individuals who have partnerships that carry out bird habitat
conservation projects in Missouri. Eligible activities include projects that protect, enhance or restore bird habitats on any lands in Missouri. All
projects should be habitat based and not strictly designed for
monitoring, however monitoring can be a component of the project
(<10%); some component of monitoring is recommended.

Remake Big Lake State Park
Everyone has a favorite state park and one that holds special memories for you
and your family. This summer, we experienced major damage to a park that is a
favorite of many people in northwest Missouri. Big Lake State Park near Craig
was inundated with floodwater from the Missouri River when a nearby levee broke.
The water has receded but the campground, cabins, motel, restaurant and pool all
received water damage and need to be repaired. And we need more than $100,000 to
do it. For example, it will cost us $20,000 just to pay for grass seed and
fertilizer and another $10,000 to replace the rock for campsites.
