Bird Banding World Bird Sanctuary hosts Inland Bird Banding Association Meeting, November 6-8, St. Louis, MO

Linda Tossing spends every Thursday morning from March through October banding birds on the 305 acre World Bird Sanctuary property near St. Louis. "We're starting to see fall migrants," she explained when I spoke with her last Thursday. That morning, their team had banded a Swainson's Thrush, Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat, along with several more common birds.

Tossing leads the team of 10 volunteer bird banders for the World Bird Sanctuary in a project that started in 2001. Volunteers band at three sites with bird feeders and three sites without feeders to watch for trends in bird diversity and density within and among the sites. The group is working to pull results together, and Tossing will present at the upcoming Inland Bird Banding Association Meeting in St. Louis.

Anyone interested in birds is invited to attend the 2009 Inland Bird Banding Association (IBBA) meeting, November 6-8, hosted by the World Bird Sanctuary. IBBA is a regional association supporting bird banding as a useful tool in the study of migration and biology of inland birds. The inland region stretches from Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the north to Texas in the south. It includes most Midwestern states.

The meeting will include a presentation by Brad Jacobs, Missouri State Ornithologist of the Missouri Department of Conservation regarding his work at Pico Bonito on Friday evening and a live bird presentation by Walter C. Crawford, Jr. and staff of the World Bird Sanctuary on Saturday evening.

Saturday morning sessions will include an early morning driving tour of the Lone Elk St. Louis County Park and then a behind the scenes tour of the World Bird Sanctuary. Presentation of Papers and Workshops will be Saturday afternoon.

For more information, and to register for the conference, visit the IBBA website. Contact Linda Tossing (also Chair of the Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative) with any questions.

The World Bird Sanctuary has been a Teaming With Wildlife Coalition member since 2008.

Mystic COA prairie Mystic COA Success

The Mystic Plains Conservation Opportunity Area partnership (led by the Missouri Prairie Foundation) continues to restore grassland habitats on private land. See below for several updates.

View photos taken by Frank Oberle on private land restored within the COA. Frank tells us, "the fescue was killed in the spring, Round-up and Plateau applied. Only grasses were planted. The following winter the forbs - wildflowers - were frost seeded. The forbs are not yet three years old. It was a USDA, FWS, MDC, MPF and NWTF joint project."

View MPF photos of a Winter 2009 seed planting on 132 acres of Premium Standard Farms land leased by the Missouri Prairie Foundation. This project utilized Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative (MoBCI) grant funds to add diversity to plantings completed through the NRCS EQIP program.

State Wildlife Grants were an important funding source in both projects.

The latest issue of the Missouri Prairie Journal also has an article, "COA Update: Mystic Plains" by Steve Mowry (pages 23-25) on overall efforts.

CLC 2009 Nominate Student for Conservation Leadership Corps!

The Conservation Federation of Missouri invites you to nominate a student (high school junior through college senior) to join our Conservation Leadership Corp (CLC).

The CLC offers students a unique opportunity to influence conservation policy and actions by actively participating in the CFM annual convention (Feb 26-28, 2010) and spring legislative field day.

The goal of the program is that no matter where their chosen careers lead them, CLC participants are prepared to personally influence policy and actions that will contribute to the conservation of Missouri's natural resources.

Learn more about the CLC program and fill out the nomination form here.

Nomination forms are due October 31.
