Waxman-Markey Climate Change Bill -- We're in it!
From the National Teaming With Wildlife Blog

Funding for wildlife adaptation is included in the Waxman-Markey Climate Change Bill. This bill will be considered by the House Energy and Commerce Committee this week. NRE adaptation would receive 1% of the allocation to start and reach 4% by 2027. This is great news as it was not looking very promising for us.

President's Budget calls for Increased Funding for State Wildlife Grants

President Obama's FY 2010 budget (introduced in early May) includes significant new funding for addressing climate impacts on wildlife: $133 million in new funding is requested, including $80 million for the Fish and Wildlife Service. Of this, $40 million will go to the State Wildlife Grants Program to assist states to incorporate climate change into wildlife action plans.

Ask Your Senators and Representatives To Co-Sponsor The No Child Left Inside Act of 2009

Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) introduced the No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act of 2009 on April 22. This bill provides $100 million to enhance environmental education efforts by amending the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The legislation does not contain federal mandates, but does provide incentives for states and local education agencies that voluntarily create a State Environmental Literacy Plan.  A key component to the legislation is outdoor learning and hands-on field experience. The legislation also establishes a grant program that permits state and local park and recreation departments to partner with a local educational agency to initiate, improve, or expand environmental education programs and creates a grant program for the professional development of environmental educators.

Support for this bill in the form of co-sponsors is a critical component for success.  Currently, there are 13 co-sponsors for the Senate bill (S. 866) and 53 co-sponsors for the House bill (H.R. 2054).  More co-sponsors and support for this bill are needed in the House and the Senate. To view the list of current co-sponsors, click here and search for the No Child Left Inside Act or enter H.R. 2054 or S. 866 in the search field in the middle of the page.

Your Action Is Needed!
Please call your U.S. Representative and Senators, via the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202)225-3121. Once connected to your legislator's office, ask to speak to the staffer that handles education issues. Identify yourself and your interest in parks, recreation, and environmental education. Request that your Senators and Representative sign on as co-sponsors of either H.R. 2054 or S. 866, the No Child Left Inside Act of 2009.

Emerald Ash BorerDon't move firewood - watch for the Emerald Ash Borer
Missouri's ash trees are at stake!
from Missouri Department of Conservation
It's hard to believe this cute little green beetle could be so deadly. But the non-native emerald ash borer (EAB) has killed millions of ash trees in the United States since the 1990s.

If left unchecked, EAB will destroy Missouri's ash trees and the many benefits they provide: shade, wildlife habitat and millions of dollars' worth of forest products.

Funding Opportunity: Wildlife Forever Challenge Grants
Deadline: 1 July 2009

Grants from Wildlife Forever are targeted for habitat restoration and acquisition, research and management, and educational projects. Special emphasis is placed upon grassroots programs that involve local conservation, sportsmen's or outdoor recreation groups.
