Featuring Northeast Missouri!
This month we're highlighting projects and coalition members from Northeast Missouri. Don't forget to read on --there's plenty of statewide information as well!
Northeast Missouri is known for rolling plains and scattered woodlands. It also shares a boundary with the Mighty Mississippi. Targeted habitats for this landscape include prairies, savannas and rivers and streams. |

Funding Success Story: Union Ridge Conservation Opportunity Area
Teaming With Wildlife supported State Wildlife Grants make Missouri's Wildlife Diversity Fund possible. Recent Wildlife Diversity Funds were used to restore woodland and savanna habitats on Union Ridge Conservation Area. Funding helped managers conduct prescribed burns, treat invasive species, and thin woodland and savanna habitats. Savanna is one of the rarest remaining natural habitats in Missouri - it can best be described as a prairie with scattered trees. Visit Union Ridge Conservation Area to see the results of this long term restoration! Thanks to the Teaming With Wildlife Coalition for supporting projects like this!

Sign the No Child Left Inside Petition!
We need to do more to get children outside to explore and learn about their natural world. And we need an environmentally literate citizenry to face the challenges posed in the 21st Century.
Each member of your organization can help by supporting passage of the No Child Left Inside Act - legislation that ensures that more children receive high-quality lessons at school about the environment and environmental challenges. The Act would provide much-needed new funding to help states provide teacher training and expand high-quality environmental education programs. Let's get kids outdoors!

Conservation Means Wise Use
by Gene Gardner, Missouri Department of Conservation
My ole' companion, Webster's New World Dictionary, defines "conservation" as "protection from loss, waste, etc." It goes on to offer another definition as "the official care and protection of natural resources." Throughout the years we have adopted a more pragmatic description, that of "wise use," that embodies both these meanings. For those of us that hunt, fish or use wood products of any sort, it simply means we can harvest some fish and game, or cut some trees for our own personal benefit, just as long as we leave some for future generations to enjoy. This is the charge that the citizens of our great state entrusted to the Missouri Department of Conservation through the foundations of the public trust doctrine. However, this trust applies to so much more than fish, forest and wildlife resources; it also means the "wise use" of monetary and manpower resources that are entrusted to us to use as tools to achieve the conservation of nature. Despite claims to the contrary, MDC continues to do an outstanding job (i.e., wise use) of both!

New Missouri Quail Recovery Blog
Aaron Jeffries, Missouri Department of Conservation Upland Game Coordinator, recently started a blog on all things quail at http://morequail.blogspot.com. Aaron says, "In the future, I'll post stories about habitat management, CP33 & CP38, landowner success stories, hunting adventures, quail myths and whatever else I can think of. In many cases I'll use the radio collared quail experiments on Davisdale and Locust Creek Conservation Areas and the new telemetry projects on private land in Cass, Osage and Andrew Counties to tell the story about edge feathering, where the birds nest, how smart those little birds are, etc...." Check it out!
