I
would like to share a story with you about a client who would like to
be known as Marie A. When she first called me, her addicted loved one
was on the way to jail and she was lost in fear and anxiety. After
years of thinking that there was nothing she could do to stop the
downward spiral of her emotions as the chaos of addiction swirled in
her life, a small voice was awakened by this latest drama. That voice
told her that it was time to act on her own behalf, so she gave me a
call.
Here are some of her comments after our three month journey together:
"I started coaching with you because I wanted to find joy and you
mentioned joy in one of your ads. I saw your ad three or four times
before I called you. I couldn't experience joy because I was so afraid.
Now I sometimes feel so good, I want to give everyone a hug. Other days
I am able to see so much synchronicity that I could cry.
"The
turning point for me was the day I woke up with my usual anxiety -- I
was in total fear mode -- and it all went away when we did our
meditation together. You asked me what I wanted to focus on and I
realized I wanted more of that connection to something bigger than
myself. It was the "a-ha" moment to realize that spirituality was about
connection rather than worship. That shift allowed me to find what I
had been missing my whole life.
"Now, the fear is mostly gone, and when it comes back, it's a reminder
to get back to God. Refocus. Change my thoughts. While it is still
not easy at times and I have to work at it, it has been such an amazing
journey to wholeness. A whole new world has opened up for me. It's as
if I have been trying to get back to who I was my whole life, but I
didn't know how. The universe gave me a major wake-up call.
"One
of the things you said in our first conversation was that I would know
I was in a good place when I no longer feared being alone. I was very
afraid then, but now I am not. Now I feel so peaceful and connected. I
am more open to things than I was before. I am more patient.
"Coaching
surprised me. While I thought I would find joy, I didn't think joy
would be this good. I didn't think I would come out of it with such a
deep feeling of connection and peacefulness. I also didn't expect to
get so many skills for life -- I now add to the skills I got from you
by gathering my own as I go."
I offer Marie's story
because it is so similar to that of every client I work with -- and it
is so similar to my own story of healing through the adversity of
addiction. Whether you choose to pursue a coaching relationship or not,
I want to offer the reality that it
is
possible to find peace, joy, and purpose regardless of what is going on
with your addict. Yes, you can. All you need to do is ask. Help
yourself.
