Life burst forth on the farm this spring as our two mama pigs gave birth to 18 tiny piglets.

Piglets!
Grace with her brood

It wa
s the first time any of us had ever had piglets. The first mama knew just what to do and handled the whole thing herself. Just as I was thinking how easy it was to be a pig farmer, the other mama went into labor.

She didn't have a clue, so I found myself jumping in to help her. We spent the night together, she and I, all wide-eyed and messy, until there were 11 new ones safely tucked up against her.

I can sum up piglets in two words: Capable and Brave. They emerge from the womb, sha
ke themselves off, and trundle on toward the food. Food, of course, comes in the form of a 400-pound mama who cannot keep track of so many tiny things scurrying under her feet. That's where the bravery comes in.

Fortunately piglets can squeal at a pitch that is ideally suited to move mama ... and mountains ... and me.

Raising Grace Ranch provides healthful naturally and humanely (an understatement!) raised meats as well as educational experiences for those who wish to understand more about how healthy food should be raised. Buy local!!

The autumn shift in New England shows us nature's way of change. Moving from summer to winter is always quite blurry and unsettled as we have a few cool days, then a few more warm ones. We find ourselves keeping all of our clothes handy as we might need a cozy fleece ... and then a t-shirt in a single day.

We humans change the same way -- in fits and starts. In my coaching work with clients the changes often come more quickly than they would otherwise, which makes the process of change even more evident. For a while a client might have one foot in her new space and one foot in her old; spend one day practicing new skills and feeling wonderful and the next day up to her neck in her old tears and fears. "What's up with that?" they always ask, "Why can't I feel good all the time now that I know how?"

Looking to nature reminds us that it can take awhile for a new change to settle in. We need time to fully embrace new habits of thought and emotion as we release the old ways. And we also need time to become comfortable with being ... well, comfortable. For many of us, life has been emotionally uncomfortable for a long time and while we know it's not the goal, it is at least familiar.

Breaking that bond with the familiar requires a conscious, constant choosing of something better. It can feel like work until we find our "new and improved" normal. Fortunately, with the right kind of support and encouragement, we do learn to be comfortable in a better place...and there we can rest for a while until it's time to grow again.

Be gentle with yourself,

Sharon

honey potGathering the Honey
Over the summer, a new Raising Grace Community formed around a newsletter I've called Gathering the Honey. It's especially for People Who Love an Addict or an Alcoholic, but I hear that many others also are benefiting from the messages within.

I called it Gathering the Honey because we might get stung as we gather the sweet stuff of our life -- that's just part of the game, isn't it? People who love or who have loved an addict know all about getting stung and can easily lose sight of their honey as they get suffocated by the chaos of addiction. There are ways to shift our responses to addiction, to set healthy boundaries, and to refocus on creating our best self. As a bonus, our healthier responses create a more favorable environment for any addict who is seeking recovery.

Healing our selves and our relationships is what this newsletter is all about. Please pass the word if it would serve someone you love.
