The group discussed the evolving global economy, the impact of terrorism and security on national budgets and how the private sector could contribute to the economic and national security of the western world. ATTEND THE COUNCIL'S EXECUTIVE BRIEF ON CYBER SECURITY | |
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month:
What Would Incentivize a Stronger Cyber Security Environment? Wednesday Afternoon - October 13, 2010 Phoenix Park Hotel | Washington, D.C.
The National Infrastructure Advisory Council has recognized that 85% of the Internet is controlled and operated by the private sector. Numerous books, reports and proclamations warn of the dangers to the nation's security posed by a massive cyber attack. Corporations daily experience attacks on their IT systems too numerous to count, yet the path to a clear solution still eludes us. To this point, the private sector has been left to its own devices to secure its critical digital infrastructure and most companies have taken precautionary measures to plug the gaps constantly highlighted by criminals and hackers. In a July 2010 blog, Cyber Security Czar Howard Schmidt issued a progress report on cyber security in which he urges that "both the private and public sectors should do all they can to secure their parts of cyberspace." The devil, however is in the details. How do we identify and promote what a "secure digital infrastructure looks like"? Who is in charge of securing the .com? Do we need legislation or would certain incentives take us in the right direction?

THE 9/10/11 PROJECT |
The Council is Looking for our Member's Perspective for the Project Video Interviews Scheduled for October 13 As you know, the Council launched its 9/10/11 Project last month, looking at how far the country has come since the day before 9/11/2001. The monographs will be available on the Council's website, and published monthly as a special centerfold in Government Security News. The Council is working very hard to assure that each of our members' perspectives and solutions are represented in these monographs. For each, we submit a list of interested contacts to our writer to interview. Senior subject matter experts from our leadership and our thought leadership working groups are asked to be part of this project. In addition to the interviews for the written monograph, we also want to ensure that each member company has the opportunity to provide a video interview to accompany the series on our website. Several of you have expressed interest in highlighting your company, and we'd like you to be featured talking about what role you/your company has had in one of the topic areas for the monograph. Our next video taping will take place immediately following the Executive Brief on October 13th (3-5:30PM). If you would like your company's perspective and/or solutions included in these monographs, please contact Kristina Tanasichuk as soon as possible. Future topics include: -Cyber Security (October 2010) -Biometrics & ID Authentication -Information Sharing (November 2010) -Maritime & Port Security -Bio-defense & Food Safety (December 2010) -Weapons of Mass Destruction -Critical Infrastructure Protection -Domestic Terrorism -Border Security -Disaster Preparedness -Land and Mass Transportation Security -DHS Stand-up/Constructing "One DHS" The Council would like to thank those members who were interviewed for the monographs, and a special thank you goes out to General Dynamics IT for sponsoring our October Monograph on Cyber Security, that will be released October 10th.
