CHERTOFF ADDRESSES COUNCIL DINNER
bae systems logo

The Council honored outgoing Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff with their prestigious Distinguished Service Award for his leadership and implementation of the nation's homeland security infrastructure for the last four years.

"Secretary Chertoff has established incredible working relationships with all sectors involved in homeland security and our nation is the better for it," said President & CEO of the Council Marc Pearl. "From the integration of the Federal Emergency Management Agency into DHS, to stopping up our porous borders, to improving tracking of the people and products entering the country, he has done a tremendous job to assure that the nation can go about its business safely and securely."
YOUR GENEROSITY IS NEEDED FOR COLLEAGUE MIKE PETRUCELLI
As you probably read in the papers in early December, Mike Petrucelli's two year old triplets were seriously injured in a fire at their home in Bethesda.  Mike was also injured and their home and most all of their belongings are a total loss.

Mike was the first Deputy Director and Chief of Staff at Citizenship and Immigration Services at DHS.  The Council will be making a donation to help the Petrucelli family and we urge you to join us.

Here is a link to the web site that you can use to make a donation to help Mike and his family.  Thank you for your generosity to one of our esteemed colleagues.

...AND WITH THE MOVE, A BRAND NEW LOOK
You may have noticed at the gala, or just in this newsletter, the Council has undergone an extensive rebranding to reflect more accurately the broad nature of "Preparedness 360."  The Council recognized that not only our inward policy agenda had to be refined, but that our outward appearance - our 'Brand' - had to reflect our broader mission.  The Council's desire was and is to project a strong, modern, forward looking, image that was a bit more inclusive than the Capitol.  Our website is also being redesigned to offer our members and the community at large the information and connection to resources you need and deserve.  Look for our "official" relaunch of all things Homeland Security & Defense Business Council in the new year.

Council Honors BearingPoint, Evan Scott Group & Red Cross

Linda Mathes of the Red CrossAlso at the gala, the Council honored the Evan Scott Group International as the 2008 Small Business Award winner for their tireless efforts to involve and engage small businesses in the homeland security mission. BearingPoint received the Council's 2008 Corporate Leadership Award for its vision and commitment to raising awareness and preparedness among their private sector peers. And the Council's 2008 Strategic Partnership award was bestowed upon the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area for their work with the Council to educate, engage and assure that communities discuss, plan and prepare for emergencies by involving both the public and private sectors by co-hosting with the Council the annual "Partners In Preparedness Symposium."
Are We Safer?  Council's Transition Event with Georgetown Offers Cousel to Obama Administration
The Council's first event with the Georgetown Public Policy Institute featured the historical context of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the evolution of the homeland security mission, and recommendations to the new administration December 4 at Georgetown University.  Greg Pellegrino, Chair of the Homeland Security & Defense Business Council and Public Sector Industry leader, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, was one of several industry leaders who advised and counseled the Department in its early stages, joined Pat Schambach, Vice President & General Manager, Homeland Security Area, CSC and former Associate Undersecretary & CIO, Transportation Security Administration; and Christian Beckner, Professional Staff Member, Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee on a panel moderated by Gary Shiffman, Ph.D., Director of Homeland Security Studies, Center for Peace and Security Studies, Georgetown University, former Chief of Staff for U.S. Customs & Border Protection, DHS. The event was moderated by Joseph Ferrara, Associate Dean, Director, MPM Program, Georgetown University with a keynote by Matthew Dallek, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, University of California, former Woodrow Wilson scholar and author of The Right Moment: Ronald Reagan's First Victory and the Decisive Turning Point in American Politics. The panelists spoke about the future of FEMA, TSA, and cyber security, along with the role of the private sector in the industry.

Panelists addressed several substantive questions and commented on the separation of the Federal Emergency Management Agency from DHS, whether the National Security Council and the Homeland Security Council should merge, and what role industry plays and should play in the future of "homeland security."
The full event will be available to view online or download to your ipod December 20th.
