The "Giving Pledge" Discussion Continues

In last month's issue, we featured the Warren Buffett-Bill Gates "Giving Pledge," in which the two billionaires called upon the nation's richest individuals to commit to giving away at least half of their wealth.

The Giving Pledge continues to spark discussion about the impact it will have on philanthropy.  Here are a few of the stories we've read:

■  "The Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge Won't Do Much Good Unless It Changes Philanthropy."  The Chronicle of Philanthropy.  July 19, 2010.  (Written by Pablo Eisenberg, senior fellow at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute).

■  "Why the Gates/Buffett Giving Pledge Matters."  Tactical Philanthropy.  July 12, 2010.  (Written by Sean Stannard-Stockton, founder and CEO of Tactical Philanthropy Advisors and slated moderator of the morning plenary at the SDG 2010 Annual Conference).

■  "The Giving Pledge and the Opportunity of a Generation."  Social Entrepreneuership.  July 12, 2010.

■  "Anticipating the Third Leg of Warren Buffett's Philanthropic Journey."  The Nonprofit Quarterly.  June 29, 2010.

Grantmakers & Government

Congresswoman McCollum

■  It is generally accepted that a relationship between government and grantmakers needs to exist, but exactly how the two should interact is undefined.  The Nonprofit Sector and Community Solutions Act, introduced last month by Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN), attempts to create a process for government and the nonprofit sector to work together, which could affect the role of funders.  Several organizations (here and here) support the resolution.

■  A Report on the Listening Post Project Chicago Roundtable on Nonprofit Advocacy and Lobbying explores how organizations can best leverage their limited financial and staff resources and assets to support nonprofit advocacy efforts.  The report is based on a roundtable convened by Johns Hopkins to expand on the results of a 2007 Listening Post Project survey on nonprofit engagement in the public policy process.

Philanthropy's Smart Money Award now has its own website.  Follow the link above to read about the very first recipient of the Smart Money Award in April and learn how to nominate an organization.  The award is given every other month to the most important acts of followership in the field of philanthropy, and the idea for it emerged during the Monitor Institute's "Cultivating Change Through Philanthropy" event held earlier this year.
