The Giving Pledge continues to spark discussion about the impact it will have on philanthropy. Here are a few of the stories we've read:

San Diego Grantmakers Summer Social
July 29, 2010, 5:30PM-7:30PM
The San Diego Museum of Art
Registration for this event is now closed!
We've had an overwhelming response from members to attend the SDG Summer Social, a casual networking event being held at The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. There has been such an interest, in fact, that we reached our maximum attendance level in a matter of days! Keep an eye out for future networking events to be promoted in the SDG Update.
In response to member inquiries, SDG is coordinating an informal meeting for corporate members who are interested in learning more about developing, managing, and implementing "Dollars for Doers" programs at their organizations. Whether you are exploring the creation of such a program or have already done so and wish to share your plan and learn from others, this meeting will benefit your corporate giving efforts. Thank you to AMN Healthcare for hosting this event!
October 14, 2010, 8AM-3PM
Joe & Vi Jacobs Center, 404 Euclid Ave., San Diego, CA 92114
Local grantmakers of all sizes, types, and giving areas convene at this event each year to explore new ideas and discuss best practices. This valuable event only happens once a year, so register today to ensure your spot! Follow the link above for additional details.

Member Collaborative Updates
Twenty-six students recently graduated from a North County Health Services medical assistance training program, thanks in part to support from a three-year grant from the San Diego Workforce Funders Collaborative. A new report by Public/Private Ventures suggests that unemployed and low-skilled workers can significantly bolster their earning power by participating in such industry-specific job training programs.

The Price Galinson Collaborative Fund and Union Bank have joined Alliance Healthcare Foundation, The Leichtag Family Foundation, McCarthy Family Foundation and The Parker Foundation in supporting the Keys to Housing initiative, an SDG member collaborative that includes participation by elected officials and that seeks to produce a regional planning document to end family homelessness by fall 2011.
Next meeting: Aug. 27, 2010, 8:30AM-10:30AM
In addition to the group's focus on improving outcomes for youth aging out of the foster care system, a number of members are supporting employment preparation and mentoring programs. Currently, Cox Communications and Qualcomm are working with South Bay Community Services to match business partners with student interns, including foster youth, aged 15-20 during the summer months. Anyone interested in hiring an intern can contact Rachel Morineau at South Bay Community Services at (619) 587-9955. |

Grantmakers & Government
Congresswoman McCollum stands with nonprofit leaders on Capitol Hill. |
■ It is generally accepted that a relationship between government and grantmakers needs to exist, but exactly how the two should interact is undefined. The Nonprofit Sector and Community Solutions Act, introduced last month by Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN), attempts to create a process for government and the nonprofit sector to work together, which could affect the role of funders. Several organizations ( here and here) support the resolution.

Award Opportunity!
Philanthropy's Smart Money Award now has its own website. Follow the link above to read about the very first recipient of the Smart Money Award in April and learn how to nominate an organization. The award is given every other month to the most important acts of followership in the field of philanthropy, and the idea for it emerged during the Monitor Institute's "Cultivating Change Through Philanthropy" event held earlier this year. |
