Trading Power:  The Next Generation in Philanthropy

Next Gen leaders eyeing future opportunities and current foundation executives looking for tomorrow's leaders will be interested in "Trading Power," a publication from the Council on Foundations in partnership with 21/64, Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy, and Resource Generation. In the publication, executives and trustees of all ages share their views on the benefits and challenges of increasing Next Gen representation in philanthropic leadership. Among the many highlighted strategies for engaging a new generation of philanthropic leaders are giving younger people "a seat at the power table where real decisions are made" and understanding and respecting new methods of communication, such as online media.

See also this Huffington Post article about the report:
"Baby boomers are hanging on, and next generation leaders are waiting -- and waiting -- their turn.
According to Trading Power...this is the first time in history that society is experiencing a delay in leadership transition, as people live longer and retire later. The economic recession has further delayed retirement plans, leaving baby boomers in positions that even they expected to have left by now. And some seasoned leaders are turning to a model of 'leadership expansion' rather than 'leadership transfer,' sharing leadership duties with younger employees. Some retain an executive emeritus role. Others take a sabbatical while potential successors serve in 'acting' capacities."

Place-Based Philanthropy

Talking Giving: Readings for Civic Reflection
This booklet, published by the Project on Civic Reflection, contains six popular readings to spur conversation on the complexities and challenges of giving. Readings are designed to tie into core operational activities-like strategic planning or guideline revision-and are accompanied by reflection exercises and discussion questions.

Training the Youngest Philanthropists
This NCFP article (with links to further resources) notes that "it's clear that involving young people remains a top priority for family philanthropists. This is a two-pronged issue. First is how to raise children who are personally philanthropic, who are motivated to give of their time, talent and treasure. Second is how to encourage and prepare the next generation to become involved in the grantmaking of the family's foundation or fund. Focusing on the latter without the former just teaches kids that philanthropy is about giving away other people's money."

New Report on U.K. Foundations Spending Out
While most trusts and foundations in the UK and the USA are still established in perpetuity and maintain endowments, the limited life option is beginning to attract more attention. Interest and discussion has been spurred on by the heightened visibility of individual philanthropists. This report seeks to better understand the phenomenon of spending out and attempts to draw an illustrative picture of what a sample of existing and recently closed spend out trusts in the United Kingdom are doing and why.

Wealth and Values Survey: The Affluent and Philanthropy
A study from PNC Bank about the giving habits of its wealthier clients indicates that 28 percent of those polled were planning to cut back on their charitable giving, as opposed to 13 percent who were planning on giving more. More ultra-wealthy people reported being concerned about their ability to give to charity than those who fell into the 'wealthy' category.
Family Philanthropy in the News

Wall Street Journal: "Not Your Father's Foundation: Giving More With Less"
Having seen their assets take a hit during the economic downturn, many founders of family foundations have been especially diligent about teaching their children the skills needed to carry on the family philanthropic tradition while also showing them how to "stretch a dollar," the Wall Street Journal reports.

Wall Street Journal:  "Some Wealthy Say: Go Ahead, Tax Me More"
One group of billionaires and millionaires, including heirs to fortunes in truck manufacturing and paper mills, is pushing for an end to Bush-era tax cuts. In the meantime, it wants the rich to use at least some of their money for the cause. Ahead of the April 15 deadline for filing income taxes in the U.S., the group on Tuesday is introducing a "Tax Fairness Pledge," through which wealthy individuals pledge to donate some or all of their tax savings to support organizations that lobby for progressive tax reform.
