"Basically, what we need are people who take a no-holds-barred, everything-is-on-the-table approach to philanthropy, where the two questions that matter are 'Does it work?' and 'Does it work better than whatever alternatives are available?'"-Dan Elitzer, Full Contact Philanthropy |

Philanthropy and the Census
Census forms are out and grantmakers continue to focus on how to help ensure an accurate count this census year. As we've noted previously, a group of California foundations has awarded $9 million in grants for outreach efforts. The Chronicle reports that nationally, foundations are pouring tens of millions into the effort. SDG member Foundation for Change recently held a convening on the census with over 200 nonprofit leaders in attendance: check out video from the event.

Philanthropic Headlines
A new survey of nonprofit groups suggests that this year will be as challenging for them as 2009, when many organizations suffered from declines in giving, delays in government payments and increased demand for their services. ( Click here for more on this Nonprofit Finance Fund Survey.) Stanford Social Innovation Review: "Merging Wisely"
With the economy in turmoil, funders are increasingly pressuring nonprofits to merge. Yet mergers are not always the right path for nonprofits in financial distress. For a healthier nonprofit sector, funders should consider a wider variety of partnership options.
Faced with steep declines in tax revenue, an increasing number of states and localities are considering eliminating various tax exemptions for nonprofit groups.
Grantmaking initiatives often fail when the foundation remains isolated from its grantees and the communities they both serve. To remedy this problem, grantmakers must work more closely with their grantees, community leaders, and other important stakeholders. |
