Research shows that economic growth for women has an important "multiplier effect." Women are more likely to share their economic gains with their families and communities at large - thus potentially making investment in women and girls a leveraged granting opportunity, no matter what your specific giving area focus.

Last summer, a new donors circle of the Women's Foundation of California called WomenGive San Diego commissioned a report to explore how best to meet the unique needs of women and girls in San Diego County. Our presenters will give you a research overview and then conduct a thoughtful facilitated discussion about how these findings may be applicable to your giving.

Corporate Roundtable with Hitachi Foundation Leader
March 24, 2010
12:00-2:00pm (Lunch served)

SDG: 5060 Shoreham Place, Suite 350, San Diego 92122

Join Barbara Dyer, president and CEO of The Hitachi Foundation, as she facilitates a conversation about the current state of corporate citizenship. Drawing from the Foundation's 2009 State of Corporate Citizenship Report, Barbara will focus this session on a number of key findings, particularly on business' role in supporting skill development and the country's ability to help low-income individuals participate in the continuing economic recovery.
  • What is the relevance of these findings in what has been deemed a "jobless" recovery?
  • What is philanthropy's role?
  • How do the experiences of the foundation and corporate giving communities in San Diego mirror those of the national philanthropic landscape?
This interactive session will dive more deeply into these questions and engage attendees in a rich give and take.

ROI Measurement Study

The Points of Light Institute/HandsOn Network is conducting an ROI study for employee volunteer programs, designed to help companies:
  • Prove the value of their volunteer programs
  • Invest more strategically (i.e., do more with less)
  • Promote accountability and continuous improvement among the social causes they support
You are invited to join the study, along with leading corporate citizens such as Deloitte, Eli Lilly, FedEx, KPMG, Pfizer, Starbucks, SAP, Timberland, and UPS.

This practical research project-designed specifically for managers of corporate volunteer programs-will measure the true business and social impacts of your volunteer activities, and anonymously benchmark your performance against other participating companies.

Starting on MLK Day (January 18th, 2010) and lasting until the end of National Volunteer Week (April 22nd, 2010), this specially-priced ($500-$3,000 based on company size) will gather key output and outcome data directly from your volunteers, using web-based surveys (with minimal administrative demands on you).  Areas of analysis will include impacts on sales, recruiting, skill development, satisfaction, brand, risk, and social-value creation.  Participants will be admitted on a rolling basis throughout the study.

International Corporate Philanthropy Day

On February 22, 2010, the corporate giving community will celebrate International Corporate Philanthropy Day, building awareness of corporate-community partnerships and inspiring businesses around the world to engage further in philanthropy.
The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy leads this global effort to engage more business leaders in promoting the importance of corporate philanthropy. On this day, CECP offers a host of media-friendly events and works with partner agencies to publicize these programs and communicate the overall benefits and importance of corporate philanthropy.

International Corporate Philanthropy Day is an opportunity to:
  • Tell your company's philanthropy story on an internationally recognized day.
  • Further engage senior management, employees, and nonprofit partners in your giving programs.
  • Raise awareness of the important role of corporate philanthropy in fostering stronger relationships across sectors.
  • Publicize your company's philanthropic initiatives, benefiting from the added media interest.
  • Enhance relationships with peers and thought leaders in the corporate giving community.

The Great Recession exacted a harsh toll on the U.S. economy, from record home foreclosures to double-digit unemployment. Among the downturn's many casualties was corporate philanthropy. The demand for help surged as the economy spiraled lower, but corporate giving decreased by 4.5%, or -8% in inflation-adjusted dollars, according to the Giving USA Foundation.

BusinessWeek:  Authentic Engagement, Truly
Whenever something is labeled 'authentic,' it's a good bet that it's anything but.
Nevertheless, every manager would be wise to consider what FSG Social Impact Advisors, a Boston organization co-founded by Harvard Business School's Michael Porter, is calling 'Authentic Engagement.' The idea is for companies to take on social problems but in a competitive context-to look for ways to contribute to the larger community while tackling key business objectives.

2009 was a year for businesses to trim the fat. But this year may be a different story, at least in the generosity department: a new study finds 65% of major Chicago area corporations plan to maintain or increase their corporate philanthropy in the coming year.
