SDBJ 2009 Corporate Philanthropy Supplement

For a third year, San Diego Business Journal published a special supplement on local corporate philanthropy, with contributions from San Diego Grantmakers and Volunteer San Diego. To download the supplement (large pdf), click here.  Nancy Jamison's column is on page 4 of the pdf. You can also view the supplements from prior years here.

The supplements aim to highlight the contributions of current corporate giving and employee volunteer programs, and to inspire more companies to get involved.
2009 Giving in Numbers

Based on corporate contributions data from 137 leading companies, the 2009 edition of Giving in Numbers features a comprehensive study of 2008 corporate giving. Giving in Numbers is a free, annual public report of the latest trends in corporate giving, published by the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. Findings include:
  • A majority of companies surveyed increased giving from 2007 to 2008 despite 68% experiencing profit declines.
  • Non-cash giving surged among companies that increased giving.
  • Strong profits through the third quarter, beyond-budget disaster-relief giving, and improved contributions tracking were among reasons given for increased giving.
  • Poll results show that CEOs and giving officers are devoted to fulfilling pre-existing commitments to grantees while working to more closely integrate philanthropic strategy with company-wide business objectives.
Informational Meeting about Step Up San Diego

December 16, 2009, 9:30-10:30 AM
Manpower, Inc. 1855 First Ave, San Diego 92101

The CEO of Manpower, Phil Blair, will be hosting a one-hour meeting in his office for companies interested in learning about the Step Up San Diego Regional Initiative (log in with username "stepupsd" and password "vested") and how it has developed over the last 12 months.

There will be an informal presentation on how companies can showcase their corporate giving through this initiative and gain value.  Recently, SDG member Mission Federal Credit Union and Barona have made commitments of support. You will learn how your company can benefit through:
  • Pre-negotiated media rates through a media partnership to support the nonprofit sector.
  • Receiving significant media resources to promote causes and nonprofits that you invest in.
Please RSVP by email or call 858/875-3333 by December 11th.
Facebook Users Help Donate Chase's Philanthropic Funds

Chase (an SDG member) is taking its philosophy of a community-centric approach to philanthropy a step further with Chase Community Giving.  The company is donating $5 million to local charities - and letting Facebook users vote for the charities they believe deserve a portion of the funds.  First, the 100 eligible organizations with the most votes will receive a $25,000 grant and will have the opportunity to share how they would put $1 million to use. Then, Facebook users will vote on these top 100 charities. Chase will grant the charity receiving the most votes $1 million, with the five runners-up getting $100,000 each. On top of this, an Advisory Board will distribute an additional $1 million to the organizations of their choice from all that are nominated.

Chronicle of Philanthropy:  "More than Half of Corporate Employees Volunteer, Study Finds"
"Though many companies have cut back on their donations during the recession, employee volunteerism is thriving, according to a new survey."

Chicago Tribune:  "
Corporate Giving Campaigns Adjust to Economy, But Show Signs of Recovery"
"Employee-giving campaigns are staging a slow recovery after a rough 2008, when layoffs, tight budgets and economic malaise prompted a sharp pullback in corporate philanthropy. This year, giving isn't expected to match pre-recession levels, but many companies are noting an improvement in worker morale and ability to donate."

Reimagining CSR Blog:  "Goldman's $500 Million Controversy"
This series of blog posts links to and discusses many articles on the controvery surround Goldman Sachs, its role in the recession, employee bonuses, and its announcement of an initiative to help small businesses.

Wall Street Journal:  "
Tough Times, New Tactics
"So to augment-or in some cases to replace-cash donations to charitable causes, corporate philanthropists have increased their focus on skills-based volunteering, pro-bono services, policy advocacy and, perhaps most notably, making business decisions that accomplish a public good."

"Companies are increasingly differentiating between assistance (charity, "giving away fish"), and development (investment, "teaching people how to fish").  They are thinking about how they interact with their external environment more strategically, holistically, and systemically.  Very few companies talk about "social responsibility" any more. Increasingly, they are talking about their long-term survival."

Regardless of recession, some cutting-edge companies are capitalizing on the growing consumer interest in CR to both do good and differentiate themselves at the same time, writes John Quelch.

BCLC:  "
Small Business Tops Trust Chart, Some Major Companies Seen as Innovators"
"The 2009 Civic Health Index...found that the American public shows mostly low trust in our nation's social institutions, with the exception of small businesses. People trust the small business community more than the scientific community, organized religion, and education institutions."

The State of Corporate Citizenship 2009: Weathering the Storm
In a strong signal that corporate social responsibility has earned a place alongside the bottom line, a survey of nearly 800 companies found most senior executives believe business should take a greater role solving problems in health care, product safety, education, and climate change, according to the 2009 State of Corporate Citizenship in the United States survey from the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship and The Hitachi Foundation.  Click here for a related article from Philanthropy Journal.

New Leadership Training for Strategic CSR
Will Marre, CEO of the REALeadership Alliance, announced the launch of leadership training tools to enable business leaders to incorporate CSR strategies into their competitive business models.
"Do we need new models, tools and resources for corporate giving? As the economy declined, corporate budgets got tighter and came under more scrutiny, the resources available for corporate leaders to invest in their communities has diminished."

CSR Index of Top 50 Companies
The CSR Index is created using data collected for Reputation Institute's 2009 Global Reputation Pulse Study. Researchers use a subset of survey results that focus on more than 200 companies with a dominant presence in the United States and believed to have a reasonably high recognition factor with the general public. The data captures public perception about a company's corporate citizenship, governance and workplace practices in the United States.
