SDG Open House and End-of-Year Reception
December 2, 2009, 4:00-6:00pm
SDG, 5060 Shoreham Place, Ste 350, San Diego 92122

You are cordially invited to join in some year-end revelry and reflection at our beautiful new office space shared with SDG members Alliance Healthcare Foundation and The California Endowment. Come together with your colleagues, celebrate, contemplate the past year and look toward the future. We are excited to host you in the new SDG home and share good conversation, delicious appetizers, champagne and wine.

JUST ADDED! The SDG Storytelling Station

Because this year we have focused on telling the stories of your givng, we are excited to announce that the open house will feature a very special "storytelling station." Everyone who attends will have a chance to reflect on their grantmaking in 2009 and record it through audio and artistic magic! We will capture your personal or organizational 2009 philanthropic experience in a visual and audio creation.  As we record your story, right before your eyes, we will create a piece of art that captures the essence of your work. You could display it proudly in your office, or, in true Web 2.0 fashion, on your website! This is our gift to you as we come together to reflect on and celebrate your year as grantmakers.

Please RSVP by November 30 by phone
(858) 875-3333 or email programs@sdgrantmakers.org (include your full name and organizational affiliation with your response, please).

Measuring Racial-Ethnic Diversity in California's Nonprofit Sector

The Urban Institute recently released a report on the diversity of our state's nonprofit sector.
This report, based on a representative sample of California's 501(c)(3) organizations, documents the extent to which California's nonprofit boards, staff, and executive leadership are racially and ethnically diverse. It analyzes diversity by an organization's size, type, funding patterns, and geographic location within the state, and examines how California nonprofits with diverse leadership have been affected by the current economic downturn. The report also presents three models for measuring diversity using different definitions of organizational diversity. The report is also available as a summary policy brief.

New Member Benefit:  Philanthropy In/Sight

With support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation for ongoing development and improvement, the Foundation Center is making Philanthropy In/Sight™ available to members of San Diego Grantmakers free of charge for one year, through the members-only area of our web site. Philanthropy In/Sight™ is an interactive mapping tool enabling grantmakers to visualize the spending patterns of private foundations and public charities through a familiar Google Map interface. The maps pinpoint the locations of grantmakers and recipients, depicting where foundation dollars are having the greatest effect or where funding is needed most, and provide detailed information about funders, recipients, and grants.

Hunger in San Diego

The New York Times recently reported that the number of Americans without consistent access to adequate food soared to 49 million last year, the highest level in 14 years.  In turn, charity and foundation leaders have asked Congress to take action. Locally, Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego (JCF) and SDG held a program on this issue on November 19 to discuss JCF's new study on food insecurity here in San Diego and how grantmakers can help.  If you missed it, click here to download the presentations (log in with username "SDGmember" and password "2001").

Federal Legislation Impacting Philanthropy

As the end of the year approaches, the Council on Foundations reports a flurry of activity around federal legislation impacting philanthropy.

John Lewis (D-GA), Chair of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight, and Representatives Danny Davis (D-IL) and Patrick Tiberi (R-OH) have introduced H.R. 4090, which would simplify the excise tax that private foundations pay on net investment income. The proposed legislation would replace the current two-tiered excise tax with a revenue-neutral, single rate of 1.32 percent. The new rate would apply to five taxable years beginning after December 31, 2009. Click here for more info.

The House Ways and Means committee will also likely approve renewals of the full set of tax provisions which are set to expire at the end of this year, according to Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY). The Tax Extenders Act of 2009, contains one-year renewals (through 2010) of the 44 expiring tax provisions included in President Obama's fiscal 2010 budget and a provision to extend tax-free distributions from individual retirement plans for charitable purposes. Specifically, the bill would extend the provision that permits tax-free charitable contributions from an IRA of up to $100,000 per taxpayer, per taxable year. Click here for more info.

A permanent extension of the estate tax is also expected, with the proposal likely to continue the 2009 estate tax levels ($3.5 million exemption for individuals; $7 million for couples) and a maximum 45 percent tax rate. If congressional action is not taken by year-end, the estate tax would be eliminated in 2010, but be reinstated in 2011. Click here for more info.

Financial Times:  "'Blood Money' That Became a Force for Good"
Like everyone who lost a loved one on 9/11 Steve and Liz Alderman were devastated when their 25-year-old son, Peter, was killed in the World Trade Center attack. Like many, they chose to honour their son's memory by creating a foundation in his name. Of the 303 non-profit organisations launched in response to 9/11, only 27 were still operating five years later, according to a study by the NonProfit Times. What has kept the Peter C. Alderman Foundation going is his parents' focus on maximising the impact of their foundation through rigorous analysis.
