Webinar: Using Corporate Resources and Expertise to Build Stronger Nonprofits
Join us for a national webinar for corporate funders on meaningful nonprofit capacity building!
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
11:30pm to 12:30pm PT
Cost: $50 per person/$215 for group site (unlimited number of individuals at one location)
Format: Webinar (PowerPoint via Internet with accompanying teleconference call)
Based on recent work TCC Group has performed for several corporate clients, this presentation focuses on the growing interest in nonprofit capacity building among corporate funders. Some corporate grantmakers are taking this approach in light of challenging economic times and reduced budgets, while others believe capacity building is just a smart, strategic way to leverage corporate assets and knowledge and had started moving in this direction before the current economic crisis hit. This webinar will provide an overview of why capacity building is a good fit for corporate funders and the different approaches and models that can be applied based on varying budgets, staffing and strategic goals. A case study of Gap Inc.'s new capacity building program will also be presented.
Presenters:
- Thomas W. Knowlton, Director of TCC Group's Corporate Practice
- Gail Gershon, Director of Employee Engagement for Gap Foundation
- Moderated by Kathleen Enright, President & CEO of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations

Register Now: SDG Annual Conference October 29, 2009

Don't miss the 2009 San Diego Grantmakers Annual Conference, to be held on Thursday, October 29 at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Center. The theme this year is " The Future of Philanthropy: Creating Silver Linings." During these troubled economic times, we believe that it is more important than ever for members of the local philanthropic community to connect with each other and learn how to have greater impact, even with limited funds available.
The morning workshop sessions include a fantastic corporate breakout:
Corporate grantmakers won't want to miss this interactive dialogue with three seasoned and insightful experts in corporate philanthropy. Our focus: how to help your company move from "talking the talk" to engaging in high impact, strategic philanthropic action. You will hear from our panelists and then have a chance to discuss recent trends in corporate giving, perspectives from the executive office (what do CEOs really want from their community investment?), and the latest scoop on how to maximize corporate philanthropy in a recession. Come meet your peers, vent a little, and learn a lot!

Corporate Giving Headlines
WSJ: Pro Bono Work Helps Firms Fight Economic SlumpSome small businesses are following the recession playbook of the unemployed. Just as many laid-off workers are volunteering more to fill up their free time and enhance their résumés, small-business owners and their employees are doing more pro bono services or volunteer work as a marketing and customer-relations strategy. Also, check out this Forbes article on pro bono programs.
Chronicle: Survey Says Half of Corporations Report Giving Less in 2009As America continues to struggle with a sour economy, fund raisers are likely to be having a difficult time raising money from corporations. A new report says that about half of the companies responding to a recent survey are decreasing their giving. You can read more on this report in Crain's New York Business, Philanthropy Journal, and PND.
Philanthropy Journal: Corporate philanthropy can boost education
As American philanthropy continues to expand and corporate foundations seek to address increasingly complex societal problems, these resources can and should be applied to an area that directly affects our national security and quality of life -- educational competitiveness.
Financial Post: Why it's better to give than receive The adage that it is better to give than to receive...is a difficult principle to follow for anyone in charge of corporate giving in a recession. The return on investment of corporate philanthropy is hard to measure and even harder to justify to shareholders at the best of times, but when profits are down, giving gets harder. In the past, when the economy slowed, money, in the form of philanthropy, became a trickle.
BCLC Blog: Building Stronger Communities through Corporate-Nonprofit Partnerships Nonprofits and corporations alike are feeling the recessionary pinch. The impact on corporate giving is that many companies are reducing grants and matching programs and are looking for creative new ways to make an impact in their communities. As nonprofits slash non-core operational expenses such as marketing, finance and IT support, a huge opportunity is opening for corporations and nonprofits to collaborate on pro bono partnerships. |

FUNDRAISING STIPULATION: SDG was developed so that grantmakers (staff and trustees) could talk candidly with their peers about the challenges they face. With that in mind, we wish to impress upon members and potential members that fundraising or marketing is not allowed at any of SDG's programs, meetings, or other events. |
