New SDG Program on the Military
September 24, 2009 3:00pm-5:00pm NTC Command Center, 2640 Historic Decatur Road, San Diego, CA 92106
Please join us for this joint program with SDG and the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation. San Diego has always been a military town, and right now many local service members have significant needs. So how can we, as grantmakers, help this important community? Our very special guests will be key current and retired military leaders, who will share information and personal insights on the urgent and compelling needs in our military community today. |
Funders and the 2010 Census
San Diego is one of the top 50 most "hard to count" counties in the country. For each person not counted, $11,500 in federal funding is lost over the next 10 years. Challenges to an accurate count include:
- Increasing diversity of population and growth in immigrant population
- Post-9/11 and "Internet age" concerns about data confidentiality
- Displacement related to economic downturn
Funders can play a role in ensuring a fair and accurate count in 2010. The Funders Census Initiative is a program of the national affinity group, Funders Committee for Civic Participation. This working group seeks to stimulate interest in the 2010 Census among funders and their grantees, particularly focused on hard-to-count communities. This includes those living in poverty and immigrant populations-both increasing in our region over the past 10 years.
The San Diego Census 2010 Partnership will be holding a kick-off event on August 19 at 9:30am at the Joe and Vi Jacobs Cener to bring community based organizations and individuals together to maximize the number of Californians counted in our community. SDG will be hosting an event specifically for funders soon: watch for a program announcement. |

Spotlight on SDG Collaborations: Coming Home to Stay
SDG convenes several different working groups and collaborations. These are groups of members that work together to leverage the power of their giving: by pooling funds and making grant decisions together, or "aligning" funding to some of the same grantees, or simply having regular learning sessions with presentations by subject experts. Each group is championed by a member or several members of SDG and facilitated by the SDG Funder Collaboration Consultant or Executive Director. This month we're highlighting:
The Coming Home to Stay Project
For the past two years, a group of foundation leaders organized by SDG have sought to address the issue of high recidivism rates among ex-offenders in City Heights and Southeast San Diego.
Robin never trusted the "system folks." She'd been in and out of jail seven times, and no program seemed to help her turn her life around. When she was finally linked with a woman with a similar past but who had made changes that stuck, life started changing for Robin. After that she was eager to become part of the Coming Home to Stay project in her neighborhood as a chance to help others learn from her experiences.
As an agency director, John tired of discussions of collaboration that always ended with competition over territory and money. He was apprehensive when he came to the first Coming Home to Stay meeting. However, he saw that this project was going to be different. Everyone around the table had a significant voice in designing a program that was not about inventing something new, but connecting the dots between providers as well as with the criminal justice system.
Ex-offenders returning to their communities face significant challenges to gaining employment and self-sufficiency, reconnecting with family, and achieving other milestones to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Currently, 74% of California ex-offenders return to prison. Just launching with the hiring of staff, the Coming Home to Stay project aims to link community based resources and the criminal justice system to provide clients a pathway to success, strengthened with transition advocacy and peer mentorship. The designers of this new strategy are traditionally-competing non-profit providers, formerly incarcerated men and women, and representatives from San Diego Sheriff's, District Attorney and Probation offices. We believe that this unique collaboration and program design will reap substantially better outcomes for ex-offenders, non-profits and criminal justice agencies alike.

Philanthropic Headlines
U.S. News: "The New Generation of Philanthropists"
For a new generation of philanthropists, giving to charity isn't just about writing checks. Instead, the focus is on volunteering, socializing, and networking -- while also contributing to good causes. San Francisco Chronicle: "Club Members Who Give Half Their Money Away"
The so-called "50 percent league" is the brainchild of a national nonprofit organization called Bolder Giving, which has highlighted these givers since its inception in 2007 in the hope that others will take a closer look at how much they give and how much more they could afford to contribute. Note: Bolder Giving was in San Diego earlier this year and met with some SDG members!
The Atlantic: "The State of Charity"
Blog post about the evolution and future of philanthropy, based on a Barclays Wealth report on high net worth individuals.
Tactical Philanthropy: "High Performance vs. High Impact Nonprofits"
A high performance nonprofit is a very well run organization. It has outstanding leadership, clear goals, an ethic of monitoring performance and making adjustments as needed, and it is financially healthy. A high impact nonprofit is one whose efforts have been proven to cause sustainable, positive change.
