San Diego Grantmakers is pleased to announce that the 2009 SDG Annual Conference will be held on Thursday, October 29. We will be returning to the lovely Joe and Vi Jacobs Center again this year. Stay tuned for exciting news about our speakers and workshop topics! The theme this year is "The Future of Philanthropy: Creating Silver Linings." During these troubled economic times, we believe that it is more important than ever for members of the local philanthropic community to connect with each other and learn how to have greater impact, even with limited funds available.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation is now accepting applications for its annual Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. Area nonprofits can apply online for Neighborhood Builder awards, which grant $200,000 in unrestricted funds and leadership training over two years. Also, community volunteers can receive a Local Heroes award, with the bank giving $5,000 to an eligible nonprofit of the winners' choice.

New Report on Giving Circle Impact
Giving circles have emerged the last decade as a growing and significant philanthropic trend among donors of all wealth levels and backgrounds. Past studies have shown that the number of giving circles has exploded across the country and that they are an established philanthropic force. A new report (pdf) released by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, "The Impact of Giving Together" specifically examines the impact of giving circles on members' giving and civic engagement. It finds that donors say they give more, give more strategically, and are more knowledgeable about nonprofit organizations and problems in their communities when they participate in giving circles. |

Wall Street Journal: Tough Times Call for Smarter Giving
"When wallets get lean, checkbooks tend to stay closed -- and checks to charity become rarer. Amid the recession and stock-market losses, philanthropy consultants say all donors are re-evaluating their giving. Those who would normally give new charities a chance are sticking with groups they know. Some are giving smaller gifts or none at all. Over the past year, a number of corporations have ended or trimmed their matching-gift programs."

 New Project Streamline Newsletter
Project Streamline, a collaborative initiative of eight organizations, including The Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, is working to improve grant application and reporting in ways that reduce costs for both grantmakers and grantseekers. Foundation Diversity Policies and Practices Toolkit
This new toolkit (large pdf), produced by The California Endowment, shows the breadth of diversity as it is addressed throughout many aspects of grantmaking. The toolkit offers a sampling of the statements, forms and templates currently employed by leading foundations, for the purpose of helping other interested funders to advance their own inclusion efforts.

The searchable PCBR database (maintained by the Human Interaction Resource Institute) contains 401 descriptions of capacity-building programs being carried out by U.S. foundations. PCBR also contains 25 profiles of intermediary organizations that serve as bridges between foundations and nonprofits. |
