San Diego Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy Supplement For a second year, San Diego Business Journal, San Diego Grantmakers, and Volunteer San Diego have worked together to produce this special supplement on local corporate philanthropy.
Published on November 17, 2008, the piece highlights the importance of corporate philanthropy during the economic downturn, discusses the contributions of current corporate giving and employee volunteer programs, and provides information about how more companies can get involved.
The objective of this year's supplement was to create a handy basic reference guide to businesses that either are starting or improving their giving and volunteerism programs.
To download the supplement (very large pdf), click here. If you would like to receive a hard copy, contact us. |

| The Economy & Corporate Giving
SDG's Philanthropy & the Economy Webpage Be sure to check out this special SDG page (part of the members-only section of the SDG website: contact us if you need login info). We have updated this page continuously since March, so it contains a wealth of economy-related resources and news headlines, as well as information about SDG programs. Here is a sample of corporate-related resources and news:
Corporate Giving in a Tough Economy: 5 Reasons Why Sure, when the economy's down, you get more prudent about expenditures. But when you're looking for places to trim, corporate giving shouldn't be the first place to whack. Here are five reasons why you should continue to support nonprofit organizations during tough times.
Does the current economic downturn spell the end of corporate citizenship? Just the opposite, says a recent survey of the Center's members. Half of the practitioners surveyed (out of 50 total) believe that instead of falling by the wayside as corporate budgets get slashed - corporate citizenship will instead become more critical to corporate reputation and business success.
"Consumers Expect Companies to Keep Giving in Hard Times" The Chronicle of Philanthropy summarizes a new survey on consumer expectations during a poor economy
"Corporate Philanthropy in Changing Economies" This past summer NCG's Corporate Philanthropy Institute explored how the current economic conditions could impact corporate philanthropy and citizenship. The program resource page includes articles, program materials, and audio of the keynote address.

Query: Policies Regarding Nonprofit Board Service?
A corporate member of one of SDG's colleague organizations is trying to establish criteria for employees/CEOs serving on nonprofit and foundation boards in order to develop a policy. They are considering issues such as the organization's mission, location, scope of services, connectivity to the goals of the corporation, financial stability, and governance structure. Has your company dealt with this issue? Please contact us with any thoughts or recommendations.
