Family Foundation Exchange
November 18, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Topic: Be All That You Can Be: Releasing Your Inner Philanthropist

The Family Foundation Exchange brings together family foundation representatives in a small group setting to explore new avenues of grantmaking, gain skills and knowledge, and find support and encouragement among peers.

Facilitator:
  • Chris Weil, The Patricia and Christopher Weil Family Foundation

Let's make the assumption (perhaps reasonable, perhaps not) that there is in almost every one of us a deep philanthropic impulse.
Obviously, this impulse can be thwarted or sublimated or denied - and is in millions of lives. Poverty, economic insecurity, fear, cultural conditioning and more work against its release.

With this said, however, it is certainly true that there are far more potential philanthropists, people not burdened with whatever works against philanthropic expression, than there are active ones.

In a world where there is a huge and never-ending mismatch between the needs that philanthropy confronts and the funding philanthropy provides, how wonderful it would be to figure out ways to bring large numbers of new people into the philanthropic universe, to figure out ways to help people release their inner philanthropist.

At this innovative and interactive program, attendees will be asked to think through a format/program (or at least the beginnings of one) which will allow SDG/FFE to reach out to (new) people and invite them into a process/course/series in which each will have the opportunity to assess his or her own "call" to philanthropy and, if timely, how best to enact it.

So come prepared to brainstorm, to explore, and to think new and (way) outside the box.

Lunch and Learn
November 19, 12:00 - 2:00pm

Topic: Helping Low-Income Families Build Economic Success

The Association of Small Foundations, San Diego Grantmakers, and SmartLink invite you to a Lunch and Learn, focusing on the economy and poverty in San Diego communities.  Join us as we explore what it really costs to live in San Diego County and whether our economy is creating the jobs that allow families to make ends meet.  For those most at risk, San Diego's low-income families, small-staffed foundations are in a position to make a real difference by addressing a range of economic stability and employment strategies, both immediate and longer term.  With limited budgets, however, philanthropists must carefully assess every decision and make the most out of every dollar.

This Lunch & Learn will provide grantmakers with concrete information to help them in their decision-making by reviewing key issues in the region, by analyzing the real cost of living in San Diego, and by learning how other small-staffed foundations have chosen to address family economic security issues.

RSVP: by November 13 to Jimmy M. Harris Jr. at ASF by email to jimmy@smallfoundations.org or toll free (888) 212-9922 and provide your name, foundation/affiliation, and email address.

October 2008 Issue: What is the Value of Family Philanthropy?  Notes from the National Symposium
"More than 100 of the nation's leading thinkers and practitioners in philanthropy gathered in Washington, DC last month to discuss the question: what is the unique value of family in philanthropy?  ... 'This symposium is the lynchpin of a research and education initiative that seeks to better understand and articulate the value of family philanthropy,' said Ginny Esposito, founder and president of the National Center for Family Philanthropy."

September 2008 Issue: Five Questions for Effectiveness: Highlights from Pursuit of Excellence
"As part of the National Center's continuing Pursuit of Excellence initiative and building on the knowledge developed in Generations of Giving by Kelin Gersick (Washington, DC: National Center for Family Philanthropy, 2004), the Center recently surveyed a random sample of 2,000 family foundations to gain insight into how families were doing around issues considered the hallmarks of good foundation practice. Some 200 foundation representatives, 84 percent of whom were family members, completed the survey, presenting a revealing look at legacy, vision, and mission; governance; family dynamics; grantmaking; and finance, administration, and accountability. The results were very encouraging."
