Happy New Year!

My year starts out well: a fireman in my family is called into a four alarm fire and is home safe and sound.  A late 70's family member, widowed awhile now, has found a new lady friend and is creating a new chapter.  My book, Organized for A Fresh Start, was on the Barnes & Noble top sellers list for a few days last week.

Health, happiness, home. All good and I hope so for you, too.

I do this work because I get to help people be who they want to be, to have the time they need for themselves or their spouse or their extended families.  More time for a growing business, a cherished hobby or just to live to their higher values.  Less time spent managing the stuff means more time for living.

By now, if you're like me and have read many articles about goals and resolutions, you're perhaps overwhelmed about where to start with all of this.  Yet, we know that what gets focus and what is measured DOES get done.

In this edition of Life Spaces, you'll find my own roundup of different ways to think about what you want for this year.  There's some creativity and great writing by my favorite mentors, angels of inspiration and just great authentic people. And of course, if it's time management, ADHD, transitions or decluttering you'd like support on, I'm an email or a phone call away.

The Holiday Punch List gives you a quick list of how to wrap up the holiday season, so you'll feel like you CAN spend time on dreaming up what you want for 2012.

Here's to your organized fresh start for 2012,

Roundup: Your Fresh Start for 2012
How to get started, and where to find inspiration.
My Roundup.

Get Outside Your Own Thoughts

  • Consult a coach.  An organizer coach, an accountability partner, friends/colleagues, clients. I consult my business coach a few times a year, and I pair up with my accountability partner monthly.
  • If you don't already have one, identify a mentor.  Virtual or local, friend or business owner.  What do you admire about what they do or how they live?  Find out what are they doing this year and how they'll do it.
  • Volunteer.  My volunteer time in professional associations is a constant reminder that my business is part of a bigger world (as am I).  The strategic view of where my small business fits and the things learned from colleagues' experience are invaluable.  Do this in your personal life and you'll gain a new perspective - even an hour a month will get the ball rolling.
  • Need support with possibilities? This wonderful book changed my thinking: The Art of Possibility
  • Going through life changes?  Check out The Life Change Network where this month the focus is on designing change.

Create a Picture of What You Want

  • "Quite simply, adding visibility before dreams manifest increases the odds that they will arrive - perhaps when you least expect them. So gather words and pictures of what you're working for and keep them in sight." creative, well-read and adventuresome muse for small business owners, Barbara Winter.  Read the post and the rest of her wonderful blog here.
  • Use Chris Brogan's idea of having three words define your focus.  My 3 words for 2011: Get Out There.  His "3 Words for 2012" - temple, untangle practice.
  • Look backward to create your new year.  More here from Victoria Moran.
  • Start Your My Next Chapter Story Board.   Create one for free on Oprah's Next Chapter website.
  • Find out ... How to Live a Fulfilled, Joyful, Creative Life.
  • Attend a local workshop. Check retreat centers, health and wellness centers, women's groups or adult education programs.
  • Join me at the Organizers' Blog Carnival!  January 2012 edition: Organizing & Health
  • My creative colleague, Linda Samuels, has a beautiful book about getting organization and balance into your life, with each season of the year suggesting different themes.  Read the first chapter free - The Other Side of Organized.
  • My book, Organize for a Fresh Start, is about organizing through and after life's big changes and transitions. If you're in transition, the book will walk you through the reflection questions as well as the practical tips. You can read a chapter or review the table of contents here.

Seek Out Your Reflection Space (mine looks like this)

  • It's away from my everyday office/work space and inherent distractions.
  • It has a window for staring outside.
  • Technology is turned off (not vibrate, OFF).
  • It's quiet, but not silent.  There's music to drown out conversation, allowing me to think.
  • Lattes (and sometimes snacks!) are available nearby.
  • It's local.  My favorite spot is The Black Forest Cafe, upstairs away from the crowds.

That's it for now - I hope these authors will inspire you to dream big and decide what YOU want out of 2012 and beyond.

The Holiday Punch List
ChecklistSome of you are probably saying: "How can I begin to think about 2012? I haven't regrouped/recovered/ended my holiday season in 2011!" Here's a quick punch list to close out 2011 and get you started.

1. Undecorate inside.  Get help, trade time with friends,or set aside your own time.  Start in one room and finish it.  Move things into the attic/garage the same day if possible so that they don't sit around in boxes.

2. Put away the holiday platters and cooking items you don't use very often. These can go outside the everyday space in your kitchen.

3. Consolidate and put away: gift wrapping, cards. Recycle empty boxes; donate gift bags.

4. Head outside and take down the decorations. Store somewhere near where they are used.

5. Purge to make room for new ... toys, clothes, books.

6. Money: What needs to be different next year for holiday spending? For taxes preparation. Decide on charities you'll give to this year.

7. What worked/didn't work about this holiday season? Write it down in your holiday binder or in your calendar so you remember next year.

8. Gather up holiday recipes and put away into a recipe book, box, binder or on the pc.

9. Add to your calendar an "appointment" time to make a trip of making store returns. Check return/refund/credit policies on the internet or call the store first.

10. Done!  Start your New Year fresh!
