Welcome to the new year -- and a chance at another fresh start !

If you're in business for yourself, use our easy checklist for closing out last year

in my first article.

And in the second article, some new approaches from several authors, on ushering in, and sticking with, your fresh start for 2011.

As always, "on my bookshelf" gives you a sense of what I'm reading/rereading. Related blog posts are my writing and interviews with those who inspire me and hopefully will inspire and motivate you, too.

My colleague, Sherrill St. Germain, independent financial planner is at it again, offering her opinions on where we are at financially this year. Check out her latest newsletter here

And last, I hope you saw the chance to try out coaching organizing by telephone -- offering a discount. If not, email me and get your discount so you can move ahead with your organizing or productivity goals this year.

To your organized life. And to a fresh start for 2011!

ChecklistClosing out the Year:

A checklist for virtual/home office

My articles are often to ask you reflective questions, the answers to which will motivate you in organizing your life the way you want it to be.

Since many of us are tired out from the holiday season or tired from snow shoveling or making those last month's goals really sing in our business, this article is just about ... doing it.

Office inspiration quotient: If you work virtually for a company or you are self-employed, you have the opportunity to allow your surroundings to help inspire you. This is a new concept, if you've been working for a company for awhile. Paint the walls. Put up a new fabric covered board for your "big picture view" calendar. Make a new vision board and keep it nearby. Look around; what do you need to organize your space for efficiency... and effectiveness with a healthy dose of inspiration?

For the self-employed: business plans 2011: All's not lost if you don't have a plan in place yet. Start by blocking two long time slots on your calendar, or a getaway day or ½ hour each morning - however you can make this happen for yourself.

I suggest two time slots because one is to create your plans, and another will be to step back and think. Analyze what makes sense. Pull yourself back to the 20,000 foot level and be your CEO.

Tinker Toys: A Roundup of Creative Ideas for Establishing Focus in 2011

Remember Tinker Toys?  I don't remember if they were mine or if I borrowed them (yeah, right) from my younger brothers, but I loved Tinker Toys. Creating organization from chaos!

I took this picture of Tinker Toys with their instruction manual at The Vermont Country store.  See the manual in the picture?  Do you go right to the instructions when you need to work on something? Do you jump in and try it out, letting your experience help you figure it out?

New Year's goals and resolutions - do you jump into the new year with ideas, goals, resolutions or a theme? Or just play and figure it out as you go?

Let's look around the toy store a bit together.

Below, I've excerpted a few of my favorite articles deciding on  how to focus your year. You won't read here any of the traditional means, which is exactly why they are listed. Each is quite different and a quick, but meaningful read.
