New look for

UF's website

The University of Florida's homepage will have an updated look beginning today. This facelift is an intermediate step as part of long-term efforts to maintain a contemporary and frequently refreshed web presence for the university. The new "skin" for www.ufl.edu maintains all links previously found on the UF homepage.

Templates for the intermediate UF homepage design will be available in both a WordPress and an HTML format in January 2012, for those university colleges, academic and administrative units that would like to use them.

 Director of development steps down

Lynne Capece stepped down at the end of October after more than three years as DCP's director of development.

"Lynne has done an outstanding job raising funding and establishing and nurturing donor and alumni relationships for DCP since she came on board in 2008," said Dean Christopher Silver. "Her hard work and success have not gone unappreciated by us - or by others."

Lynne has since joined the College of Medicine as a director of development in the Department of Surgery. In her career, she served first as a physician's assistant, and then in various health care administrative roles for 20 years prior to switching to development.

While the search for Lynne's replacement is under way, any questions regarding development issues should be referred to Debbie Herman at [email protected].

 ARC students win design competition

Award-winning "Connecting Living" design by architecture master's students Andrew Hazen-Hamilton, Songchai Asawaprecha, Joo Seung Lee, and Jourdona La Fate.

Four architecture master's students won first place in the AARP /American Institute of Architecture Students 2011 Livable Communities Phase 2: Building Student Design Competition.

The students, Andrew Hazen-Hamilton, Songchai Asawaprecha, Joo Seung Lee, and Jourdona LaFate, designed a project titled "Connected Living" that centered on a pedestrian-friendly design bridging Orlando's urban core and new train and bus stations with the adjacent residential area across the interstate.

Students were asked to use the features present in the community master plans submitted to last year's AARP competition and to further investigate the designs for ways to improve on and grow the ideas of the livable community. The AARP and the AIAS were looking for "attractive, flexible and user-friendly housing designs that utilize the basic ideas of sustainability, accessibility, livability and visitability."

Design Field Experience now in second year

The above image is from a charrette exercise completed by DCP students in Germany as part of the 2011 Design Field Experience program. Charged with addressing the issue of needing more greenery as well as places of rest, the group designed this bench comprised of thousands of small honeycombs, each with three levels of flex.

The Department of Interior Design's Design Field Experience program is now in its second year at DCP. All students who have completed their junior year in the program are required to gain field experience in order to enrich their learning and provide valuable real-world experience. While most students opt for the internship track, other options currently exist, including study abroad, service learning and research experience.

"The way we have structured the field experience for our students was lauded in the department's recent CIDA reaccreditation review [Feb. 2011]," said Margaret Portillo, professor and department chair. "The team was pleased that we not only gave students the opportunity to do internships but also encouraged undergraduate research, study abroad programs having unique opportunities for product, interior design and construction as well as those that offered hands-on service learning for low-income populations. The DFE is an exciting program that is only gaining momentum."

University's provost visits Fab Lab

Provost Joseph Glover and Peggy Carr, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Students and Academic Affairs, discuss the use of equipment in the A2 Fabrication Laboratory for construction of sophisticated models exploring architectural design alternatives.

Joseph Glover, UF provost and senior vice president of academic affairs, recently visited the Art and Architecture Fabrication Laboratory, or A Fab Lab, during an award ceremony.

The open-door event, held on Oct. 21, allowed visitors to view the lab's technologies as well as student work completed in the Fab Lab.

Located in the Architecture Building, the lab currently houses three primary technologies - laser cutters, 3D printing and 3D scanning, each of which provides different ways of bridging between physical and digital realm.

The Fab Lab was founded as a joint venture between the College of Design, Construction and Planning and the College of Fine Arts, started largely from grant work conducted by Mark McGlothlin, associate professor of architecture, and Jack Stenner, assistant professor of art and art history.

The majority of the funding came from a grant from UF's Division of Sponsored Research, which was supplemented with funding from the college to help renovate the facilities.

The Rinker School held its fall Career Fair on Oct. 18 at the O'Connell Center. The career fair was attended by more than 40 companies and roughly 200 students and visitors.
