What Whitening Can't Do: Professional tooth whitening will not correct discoloration due to decay. Decaying teeth should be corrected for function first, and then may respond to whitening treatment. Teeth should be repaired before whitening is performed. Teeth with dark spots from old amalgam fillings will also not respond to whitening. Patients may choose to replace old metal fillings with porcelain for better results.
Whitening may tone down the appearance of fluorosis, a mottled whitening of the teeth caused by overexposure to fluoride, but it will not generally reverse this discoloration. Also, whitening is only partially effective in reducing tetracycline stains. Severe discolouration may respond better to treatment with porcelain veneers.
