Greetings!

It's that time of year again; time to take my son back to college. I will make this brief as everyone is packing up the trucks and cars (perhaps I'll stay right here with you as they pack - lol).  I'm actually wondering how a 19 year old accumulates so much "stuff"!  Do I hear simplify?!

I think it is easy to accumulate "stuff" in both our personal and professional lives.  While my son's stuff is physical, I am thinking now about the emotional "stuff" or baggage we bring to our lives. We are bombarded constantly with information and items that need our attention.  In fact, I have a "to do" list and a "get it done now" list (lol).  I need an assistant at home and work - can you relate?

One way I've found to simplify life is to do what's important FIRST.  Those items that contribute to our goals - both personally and professionally.  Do everything with a purpose, with an end goal in mind. Make that phone call, write that proposal or sit down and enjoy a movie with your family and friends.  Do what's important and do it now.  You will have to take a look at your life, your priorities and decide what's important.

It takes consistent effort to live this way as the "busy work" creeps in without us even realizing it.  The "busy" work is usually easy and comfortable and something we would much rather do than the tough, uncomfortable tasks.  It's usually those tough items, however that create momentum and propel us forward in our lives.

With the important things checked off your "to do" list you will enjoy a sense of accomplishment and free those nagging thoughts from your mind.  It's the nagging thoughts that create clutter in our minds.  Simplify your life - just do whatever you know you need to do...and do it now.

And, speaking of nagging thoughts, I'm thinking I should get out there and supervise this packing operation!!!

One more thing...we have a brand new blog, The Event Planners Guide Book.  It's not perfect and is still in process, but I just "did it" and have one less nagging thought... Please visit the blog and subscribe to updates.

I would love to hear your suggestions for handling the "stuff" of life.  Email me - my assistant will read your emails.  Just kidding...as always, I will read and answer your emails. You are important to me.

Enjoy the last days of summer ~

Kim

REFERRALS INCREASED BY OVER 100%

by Kevin Stirtz   Referral Sticker

The headline of this post comes from a blog post by my friend Brian Carroll. His post describes a conversation he had with a client where they discussed how lead generation often ignores current customers. As a result of the discussion, one CEO decided his company would begin focusing more on current customers. He even referred to their new focus as their "Customers First Plan".

The outcome of their new-found focus on existing customers was revealing. They increased revenue from current customers by 15%. Even better, their referrals jumped over 100%.

As they focused more on existing customers, they no doubt did things that improved their relationships with them. And, probably they learned more what their customers wanted from them, how they were doing and what the current gap was. Perhaps they also took action to improve the service they delivered to their customers. (It makes sense they would.)

By doing all this they delivered a powerful message to their customers: You are important. We are here to serve you.

I've seen this happen time and again. When you honestly and sincerely reach out to your customers and ask them how you can do better, you build a stronger relationship. Your customers begin to see you less as a vendor and more as a partner. They see the value in having an ongoing, two-way exchange of ideas, feedback and best practices with you. This increases your value to them.

You become more important to them. You might even become indispensable.

I think these numbers show how important this company became to their customers. By increasing referrals over 100%, their customers told them "we trust you". It's their way of saying, we want to help. Sometimes, it's as much about bragging as it is helping. Either way, the increase in referrals is a sure sign this company built tremendous value and better relationships with their customers.

And they did it all by reaching out, by connecting with them.

How could you do something similar in your company?
