Plan Your Success
Success is no accident.  It doesn't just happen.  Success is realized as you consistently take actions that are in-line with your objectives and goals.

So, as you take some time this month to reflect on the past and the future look at what you want from all aspects of your life.  Use the following guidelines to help you get started.
  1. Begin with the end in mind.  What do you want your life to look like?
  2. Look at the whole picture when setting goals: family, spiritual, educational, career, physical, etc.
  3. Discover your passions. Know what moves you and why.
  4. Know your strengths and your weaknesses. Capitalize on those strengths and improve your weaknesses (or hire someone who can do what you can't!).
  5. Analyze what worked and what didn't in 2009 and why.
  6. Develop a step by step plan of action to meet your objectives and accomplish your goals.
  7. Make sure your goals stretch you, but are attainable and realistic.
  8. Have fun.  Challenge yourself to reach for your dreams - empowered and purposeful.
Wishing you much success in the new year!

Greetings!

Happy New Year!  I love January.  The holiday decorations are packed up and put away, and my closets, drawers, and files are all resorted, reorganized and re-filed.  January is when I clean out last year's clutter - physically and mentally.  I draw a line in the sand and look to what the new year will bring.  More specifically, I look to what I need to do to reach the goals I set for myself in the major areas of my life.  I have included some tips in the newsletter below to help you set and keep your goals.  Remember - you can't reach a goal not defined.

The EPA is here to help you reach your goals. In addition to our core areas of expertise  -  legal assistance, insurance, and internet marketing,  we are adding educational and certification programs (see below),  a blog, new markets, increased marketing and possibly regional chapters (we get inquiries about this almost daily)  - all this year!  These programs, services and benefits are designed to help you succeed.

Watch for our next newsletter which will focus on marketing your business.  Based on the responses to the question, "What is your biggest challenge in business?" sent in a couple of months ago, this area seems to hold the most mystery for business owners.

Be sure to check out our new feature in the blue column to the left.  Now you can learn more about new EPA members just by clicking on their company name.

I am always open to your suggestions, ideas and needs - click here to email me.

Wishing you the best,

Kim

HOW TO KEEP NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS ~
5 GOAL SETTING TIPS

By Lyndsay Swinton

"What am I doing? Where am I going? There's got to be more to life than this!...." New Years resolutions spring up from our attempts to answer such tricky questions.

I won't pretend to know the answers, but I can share 5 goal setting tips on how to keep New Years resolutions. After all, the quickest New Years resolutions to be broken are usually quickly formed, poorly thought out goals.

Goal Setting Tip 1 - Once a year is enough, thanks!

It's healthy to ask big questions about where your life is going, but ask them too often and you'll end up in a bog of directionless despair. Take the pressure off, and only ask the big questions once, or at most, twice a year.

Goal Setting Tip 2 - 7 is the magic number

George Miller, a 1950's psychologist, proposed that we can only deal with 7 bits of information at any one time. Any more information and we need to group things into more memorable, manageable chunks. So when you create your New Year master plan, keep goals down to a manageable number and group similar areas.

Goal Setting Tip 3 - I say tomayto, you say tomaato - let's call the whole thing off!

WHAT IS LIABILITY INSURANCE & DO I NEED IT?
Do you cross your fingers and just hope no one gets hurt at an event you are participating in or planning? How much is peace of mind for you and your family worth?

This is the time of year when we are inundated with phone calls from small business owners looking for information about insurance.  Since providing general and professional liability insurance to event professionals is one of our core areas of expertise, we have put together a general overview of what insurance is to assist you as you plan for the upcoming year's expenses.

Today, many small businesses operate without liability insurance, with the exception of worker's compensation insurance, which is required by law. In most cases, business owners simply want to cut down on operating costs, but in today's litigious climate operating without liability coverage is a highly dangerous practice.

Liability insurance is designed to offer specific protection against third party claims. Payment is not typically made to the insured, but rather to someone suffering loss who is not a party to the insurance contract.

General Liability insurance covers claims of bodily injury or other physical injury or property damage that may occur on your premises or at other covered locations where you normally conduct business and are caused by either direct or indirect actions of the insured. In addition to covering the claims listed above, GL policies also cover the cost to defend or settle claims - even if the claims are fraudulent.

Professional Liability (Errors and Omissions) is insurance that covers your company, or you individually, in the event a client holds you responsible for a service you provided, or failed to provide, that did not have the expected or promised results. Even with the best intentions, employees and risk management practices in place, mistakes will be made. If you are in the business of providing a service to your client for a fee, you have an E&O exposure. Professional Liability policies also cover the cost to defend or settle claims.

While many small businesses do not secure general or professional liability insurance due to the cost of premiums, the out-of-pocket costs in the event of a claim, for a legal defense or settlement can far exceed premium costs. In many cases, the costs of a claim could be enough to shut down a small business. Just one claim can wipe out what took years to build.

Bottom Line: Without liability insurance, a business can take a major hit from the litigation process and the owner's personal assets can become vulnerable. Businesses must consider all potential risk exposures when deciding how much coverage is appropriate, required and cost effective.
