The Annual Health Insurance Check-up

Having an accident or being diagnosed with a serious illness can be a great emotional and financial burden for anyone.  Even if we are healthy most of the time, sooner or later, almost all of us will have a year when we need extensive and expensive healthcare. Getting hit with unexpected medical bills can have a significant impact on  personal assets and future security. Last year American families spent an average of $6,000 out of pocket for health insurance and other medical costs, and that number is expected to rise to $9,000 by 2012, according to figures from the National Coalition of Health Care.

The best way to prepare for the unexpected is to be proactive and do an annual health insurance check-up. All health plans are not the same in terms of what they cover. Take the time to study  your policy carefully to find out exactly what your policy covers and know how much you're going to pay out-of- pocket, if there is a co-pay or deductible you need to meet, or if there's an overall limit or cap on benefits. Other out-of-pocket costs to look at include: prescription drugs, medical equipment and supplies, eye ware, hearing aids and home modification.

The bottom line is it's important to know how the plan works and to limit your out-of-pocket exposure. Selecting a plan based on your individual needs will help you avoid unnecessary costs.

For your convenience, GOODCARE  has a free  Out-of-Pocket Health Care Expenses Worksheet to help you organize your out-of-pocket costs.

We are here to review your needs and help find quality health plans that will meet those needs in the most economical way. Call us @ 1-866-696-6543.

Ask Dr. Katy
Q: I have been forced to take early retirement at age 59 and my company has no retiree health coverage. What are my options for getting health insurance on my own?

A: When you leave your employer's group health insurance you will be faced with puzzling choices. Perhaps you have a spouse or domestic partner who has group coverage that can get. Maybe you'll find another job that offers health insurance. If not here are some alternatives:

COBRA lets you temporarily maintain coverage through the group health insurance offered by your former employer. If COBRA is your only option until you find coverage elsewhere, take it. Don't let your coverage lapse!   If you do - it will be much more difficult and costly for you to find health insurance.

Check out www.HealthCare.gov to find individual health insurance as well as state and federal high risk pools in your area.

Establish your own business. Maybe you're thinking of starting your own small business, such as a consulting business. You could then look for employer based health insurance. That may be a very cost effective alternative.
