Medicare B Premiums for 2009
Good News for Most Medicare Beneficiaries
The good news is that most Medicare beneficiaries will not see an increase in their Medicare B premiums this next year. As you can see from the table below, higher income beneficiaries will see rates increase 10-29% in 2009. Medicare uses your 2007 Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI), which is a combination of your adjusted gross (taxable) income and tax exempt interested income to determine which premium you will pay.

Get a Flu Shot!
Speaking of that time of year again! The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot, and the best time to get one is from early October to mid-November. You need a flu shot every year because the virus is constantly changing and new vaccines are developed annually to protect against new strains. The American Lung Association website can help you find a flu clinic in your area.

Q:I have retired from my job and will not have the higher income that I had in 2007. Will I still have to pay the higher Medicare B premium in 2009 even though I won't have a high income?

A: You can notify Social Security with your change in financial status for 2009 by providing Social Security a letter from your employer about your retirement and filing the SSA-44 form. Usually, Social Security will accept that documentation and change your premium. If Social Security does not change your premium to the level you think it should be, you can appeal that decision by filing a "Request for Reconsideration". We have more information on our website about how to do this.
